trying to think about turnbased rpgs and the culture around them fucks me up a lot. on one hand, i could say it permanently rests on this line where both its haters and fans, no matter how loud, more often than not do not actually understand anything about them. it feels like a genre that is often enjoyed much more through the idealized aesthetic / "idea" of what an rpg is, rather than like... actually sitting down and playing them. on the other hand, i'm not even entirely sure if I can blame people for having such widely different priorities when wanting to play one of these. i'm not sure if saying that it's the genre's own fault for bringing it upon itself would be the correct choice of words here, as it's just such a difficult type of game to make, more than one would initially think. there's so much to take into account that it leads me to believe that maybe i'm the wrong one. am i ever going to agree with the people who view rpgs as visual novels+? with people who think timed hits and adventure game esque puzzles seriously and inherently enhance the gameplay of an rpg? or with people who think only combat matters, story and everything else can be worthless? no, not at all. but i think that the sheer complexity and abundance of this genre makes it kind of understandable why so many subsections of rpg enjoyers exist, and that these games all serve their own purpose. i may not ever shake the feeling that people just do not really like What An RPG Is all that much, but i can, at the very least, sympathize as to why now. i used to be there at one point i also mention turnbased rpgs specifically because i think the culture around them and wildly differing opinions about them is infinitely more intense and prevalent here than in tactical or action games. anyway this is today's pointless lina ramble nobody's even gonna read (i don't blame you). silver the hedgehog is quite cool. you should tell me if you feel the same if you actually read any of this
