I had a lot more fun with it than I ever did Mana. Never knew it got so much hate until I found the internet.

But then people will just try to invent any stupid excuse as to why some "much better" game they've never played didn't get localized. NVM Square probably never had any serious plans to.

Another is that instead of MP fueled magic, you utilize Alchemy formulas. Similar to the Ultima games, you gather ingredients and combine them to create various spell effects. There are a lot throughout the game, though only eight can be equipped at a time.

And a second computer controlled character accompanying you, with the player able to swap control between them at any time via the Select button.

There are some differences, though. One is that there are only four weapon types now, and they can only gain up to three levels apiece.

It was easy to make comparisons to Secret of Mana, as Evermore's title implies it to be a spinoff game, and it even utilizes a similar interface with the rotating icons for your inventory, weapons and spells. Even the gameplay feels similar with the meter that determines weapon damage...

So yeah, just tough luck that several of those games have never been brought over; Evermore had nothing to do with it.

Granted several of said games still have yet to be officially localized even today, but I'm getting off track. Back to Evermore.

It takes about a year to localize a game, and any work they would have done there probably would have been completed around the time of the N64's launch, which would negatively affect sales and therefore profits. Plus Square was eyeing moving over to the PlayStation camp anyway.

The developers have said in interviews they were hired on specifically for this project, and were let go once it proved to be a sales disappear; no company resources were 'diverted' from other projects.

NTM most of the aforementioned games got released in late '95 or even into '96.

It was maligned by fans for many years under the belief that it was released in lieu of games like Seiken Densetsu 3, Bahamut Lagoon, Treasure of the Rudras and Live a Live, though such claims don't really hold up to scrutiny.

Secret of Evermore for SNES

Alright, why not. Let's talk about one of Square's biggest black sheep.

Secret of Evermore. Released in 1995, it was Square's only game to be developed by a North American team and the only game under their banner to never be released in Japan.

Yeah but it's so fucking boring. Looks great and the soundtrack is incredible but that just makes everyone forget it's no fun to actually play.

Maybe I'll talk about Evermore though cuz it's a definite black sheep in Square's library

I haven't played very many of them. And the only one I ever finished was the Trials remake

Have mixed feelings about the remake but it definitely looks great
