this is, weirdly, the same problem the CDC have with vaccines

if your audience doesn't have the technical skill to recognize good arguments from bad, then unless one side concedes they just see two people arguing and they go with whoever's vibes they like more

LLMs are another tool for automation, just like word processors and calculators and search engines and factories. One way to look at those things is that they make you "lazy", but another way is that they free your time to do more or to focus on the bits the machine can't do for you

In general you can find this kind of study result for just about anything. I'm sure kids using calculators would have less brain engagement than kids doing math by hand but calculators do not cause brain rot (I bet parents in the 90's thought they would though, technophobia never changes)

LLMs have not been documented as tangibly stunting brain growth! That's a massive over-interpretation of a fairly weak study (this one I think: arxiv.org/pdf/2506.088... )

It's partly this, but after the next-token prediction training, they're also trained in response to human feedback. And my strong suspicion is the human raters liked being praised!

And I would not bet money on those staying unsolved by 2030, or even by 2027.

At this point I've kinda given up on claiming I know what the limits of fancy matrix multiplications are. They're not the same as human thought, but it's getting harder and harder to find things humans can do that they can't; we're down to long logic chains, executive function and metacognition.
