We hope that our program bolsters #ScienceCommunication in Toronto and beyond!

In this program, youth will learn how to become mentors and stewards of their community environment, and will bring their teachings back to their peers. We trust participants to define their own “community environment” and the gaps they wish to address within them.

For Toronto youth, specifically gender minorities of colour, we've got a new program: DICEM! Diverse & Inclusive Community EnviroMentors aims to provide aspiring gender-diverse youth of colour (ages 18-29) with the opportunity to learn how to engage their community environment.

Overall, we're SO excited to be starting up programming with Ocean Week, and to be promoting marine science to gender minorities of colour. It's been such a rush getting SCI AIDE up and running, and we can't wait to see how this goes!

We're based in Toronto, Canada, but hope to see folks from all over the world join us at our virtual events, too! Keep an eye out--we've already got some fun stuff planned. Thanks for being here, and we can't wait to get started!

We value diversity and engagement. The text is as follows: WE VALUE THE... Diversity - We value the variety of perspectives and experiences people bring into our spaces and respect the nuance and complications that may bring. Engagement - We value the ways in which people bring themselves into their research, their experiences, and their ability to be and stay engaged.

It's scary, honestly, but that isn't a bad thing. This is the time to take action; to learn how to bridge gaps in knowledge; to increase our capacity for leadership and solidarity, whatever that may look like. And it'll look different for all of us.

We value accessibility and inclusivity. The text is as follows: WE VALUE THE... Accessibility - We value the ways people can participate, as well as the limits they must abide by to survive. Inclusivity - We value the initiative community members take when they aspire to learn more about and become part of the scientific community.

In times like these, where our rights are being threatened, it's imperative that we find ways to bolster what it means to research, validate, and advocate for ourselves, our communities, and the world around us.

A Why Us section that details the need for SCI AIDE: that gender-diverse people of colour need to be included in STEM to advocate for better things. Text is as follows: WHY US Gender-diverse BIPOC have been exploited by and excluded from scientific research, with our bodies seen as expendable and our experiences invalidated. There is a deep disconnect and distrust between our communities and researchers. SCI AIDE aims to rebuild trust to bridge gaps in knowledge, validate lived and historical experiences, and provide opportunities for folks to pave new paths towards what collaboration could look like.

We're also going to work in a sustainable way--that means not pushing ourselves beyond what we can give, and providing programming in a way that fits our capacities.

An About Us section that details our mission to make science more accessible, inclusive, diverse, equitable, and engaging. Text is as follows: ABOUT US SCI AIDE is a new grassroots and community-led project that aims to make science easily understandable and available to enthusiasts and citizen scientists. We focus on historically marginalized and underserved communities who wish to learn more about the sciences, providing workshops as well as connections to mentors and opportunities they may not have known about otherwise. SCI AIDE aims to provide both programming and a network to people who have been historically excluded from scientific exploration, research, and opportunity.

We're super excited to be starting up this new grassroots initiative for and by gender minorities of colour to connect us to science of all kinds.

We're here to host workshops, experiences, and other learning opportunities whenever possible.
