I've been thinking of this thread again after reading Jude Doyle's latest on how Patriarchy is the explanation for why so many men found common cause with Jeffrey Epstein, and it seems to me that in trying to complain about what Epstein and his associates did was best described as rape.

Really important corrective to the discourse that regards the Epstein scandal an outlier, as if the only men who ever rape are rich and powerful men.

A lot of people, and not just conservative men, use the Epstein scandal as a way to escape thinking about bigger issues.....

This part right here matters so much. Yes, a shady cabal of the ultra wealthy doing this repugnant shit is extremely important. But stop acting like the wealth and power are *why* they're evil.

There is no way that sexual abuse becomes this pervasive in society without ordinary, everyday people accepting it, normalizing it, and yes, sometimes, creating culture that aims to normalize it also. It would be comforting if this were rare and only done by the very powerful. It's not. It's common.

We know about the famous cases because they're famous, but one in nine girls and one in 20 boys will be sexually abused by the time they reach 18, and 34% of those victims will be under age 12. Teen girls are at higher risk for rape than adults.
