Yes, you CAN get there in an EV. Weโ€™re here to prove it by visiting national and state parks. Photos by Jennifer Sensiba (me), accompanied by my wife Laura and our cat Mouse, plus sometimes our kids!

My wife actually kind of liked the Model X a few years ago, but by the time we were in a position to pick one up, buying one made no sense. We can't support someone who hates our guts, and the truck Tesla ended up selling just isn't a good fit for our towing needs.

One easy way is to connect the vehicle to A Better Route Planner to gather data.

It's rated for 12,500 lbs. That's a little over 6 tons US, or 5.7 metric tons. I'm going to tow about 6000 lbs (2.7 metric tons). Range will likely be cut in half or a little worse.

I'll probably get around 170 miles of range.

2025 had some serious setbacks, but we're geared up for an amazing 2026. Not only will we be visiting the parks, but we'll also be doing a long-term review of our Silverado EV!

It's pretty easy to lose traction and sink all 4 wheels. Would've been hilarious if they'd've gotten caught that way.

I wonder what the data looks like if we exclude all air-cooled batteries.

Charge To The Parks is back! We just picked up a Silverado EV (pictured next to my brother's hybrid Maverick) that we'll be using to tow our all-electric travel trailer to visit more national and state parks across the US.

More info coming tomorrow!

I've wondered whether it would be good for teenagers. The e-bike angle is probably the best.

A3: I think electronic maps are OK if you study the map before going and try to be familiar with your surroundings. Relying on voice navigation and not ever stopping to study and reflect is what gets people into trouble.

At a minimum, offline maps should be downloaded on multiple devices

A10: I think using things like generative erase or fill is OK. It's not real, but it's still anchored to reality and you are making a creative choice.

But, "Generate an image of the Grand Canyon with a rainbow and the full moon" is slop people should be shamed for.

A4: Last year, our trip to North Cackalack got messed up by an I-40 closure in the mountains. That road just can't catch a break. We couldn't find any campgrounds and had to drive all night to find a place to park the camper. #ParkChat

The busier parks are already taking this seriously. Lots of blocked off shoulders at Great Smoky Mountains, for example. #ParkChat

Many influencers respect the rules. Enforcement would help the bad ones to either quit or improve the educational value of the content.

You raise a great point. One of my more fun Grand Canyon experiences was a time in 2019 when I had to leave an EV to charge at a slow charger all day. Hopping the bus and going around without my car was actually refreshing in unexpected ways.

A10: I think NPS is doing a lot to experiment with that right now, even if things like timed entry can be painful.

Ultimately, we probably need to spread the load to more national parks, more promotion of state parks, etc.
