Be careful what you wish for. Because it might not happen and then you'll be Sad.

Trashline orb weaver with stabilimentum. It’s less than the size of my pinky fingernail. Fun fact: if you speak at volume toward these, they’ll drop suddenly and play dead. So be polite and speak gently to them.

Screen cap of parodic version of William Blake's "The Tyger" that begins:
Tyger! Tyger! Burning bright
(Not sure if I spelled that right)
What immortal hand or eye
Could fashion such a stripy guy?
What the hammer that hath hewn it
Into such a chonky unit?
Did who made the lamb make thee,
Or an external franchisee?

Araneus saevus or fierce orb weaver. This one was having some difficulty and I think was at the end of her lifespan, so I moved her to somewhere she could rest. Quite a large orb weaver for around here at approx 20mm. Photo marked graphic so the spider-averse don’t get a jump scare.

AI is the new motion smoothing: it’s become default on everything even though no one wants it, yet 80% of the population aren’t aware what they’re looking at is awful.

Jane Goodall was one of the people who made me interested in science as a kid, biology in particular. My career hasn’t been at all linear, but my interest in science has never wavered.

Sunbeam hitting a table with three glass pumpkins - two purple and one orange - scattering their colours across the surface. A large green bottle in the back also catches the light. A wooden windmill and ceramic houses dot the background and a friendly yet still spooky ceramic scarecrow stands gourd.

'Long history of blaming mothers': Trump's Tylenol warning echoes past misconceptions Medical scholars say, efforts to find a singular cause for autism has historically led to scrutinizing parents and fueling stigma about autism

The first thing I thought about when the whole Tylenol thing exploded was the β€œcold mothers” theory from back when. Just a modern day way to blame mothers for autism. Working moms, vaccines and Tylenol do all have something in common - it’s that they DON’T cause autism.

Night time shot of cedars in a rock garden with a reddening maple tree and fall asters. Trees are lit from the porch lights so the colour pops against the darkness of the (probably not haunted, no not haunted at all) woods beyond.

Two cedars in a rock garden with some fall asters and a small understory maple tree with reddening leaves. A still bushy fuchsia from spring hangs from a hook attached to one of the cedar trees. A little fairy door in the trunk of the tree adds additional whimsy.

Outside reading time views. The maples are turning out really nice this autumn.

"There are naive questions, tedious questions, ill-phrased questions, questions put after inadequate self-criticism. But every question is a cry to understand the world. There is no such thing as a dumb question."

As a Little Girl I Always Dreamed of Collaborating in Google Docs
Sorry if I've been acting weird the last few decades
It's just that I was born to dilly-dally but I've been forced to hurry-scurry
I was made to trade seashells for blueberries poppies for pine cones stories for songs
while everyone I love sits round the same fire
But instead, here I am
with the entire world in my pocketβ€” waiting for more news to break us
hoping your email never finds me

I stepped outside today and Ohio smelled like dust and smoke.
A thin, ill-looking fox marched through my front yard in broad daylight.
The world feels like a skinned-knee right now, but I remind myself that skinned-knees hurt and hurt and itch and itch and heal.

In non-apocalyptic news, this happened.

I have long maintained that wild turkeys are very large birds that think they are much smaller birds, and that we should never relieve them of that misapprehension.
