So ICE shot a woman in Chicago today during a traffic jam. Supposedly because they realized she had a weapon but also because she was allegedly known to have been encouraging beople to harass and attack ICE agents. Uh huh. Sounds totally reasonable.

I want to reiterate: Black Americans have ALWAYS experienced the governmentlessness and unconstitutional actions we are witnessing now. This is why so many of us flew warning flags when Trump ran the first time. We recognize authoritarianism better than anyone else in this country.

Also, Trump's depiction of Portland as "war-ravaged" not only is a response to antifascist protests there, but takes advantage of growing hostility toward the homeless. Reassuring people that Portland is clean, happy, and middle class misses the point of who will likely be targeted.

I get the impulse to post pictures of Portland's general calmness and "normalcy," to contest Trump's claim that it is "war-ravaged." But as I reflect on it, it's rubbing me the wrong way a bit in comparison to the defenses of Chicago's and D.C.'s image.

Categories like terrorism and extremism have always been racialized. Let's think about that in how we discuss Trump's movement of troops into Portland, a city with a large white majority. What's shocking isn't Portland's relative "innocence"--it's Trump admin's rapid expansion of states of exception

We confront a nearly-identical network of white conservatives employing lawlessness & violence in pursuit of unmitigated profit & power, but have yet to identify this group or the dangers it poses in a compelling way.

An important political tactic that helped advance the defeat of enslavers was creating the term Slave Power, which *correctly* diagnosed the way a shadowy & corrupt network of white conservatives hijacked the state for their own profit & power. We need some version of that today.
