This appears in a piece where Stuff abrogates responsibility by presenting it as "both sides" & platforming "community voices"

Surely by now people understand this kind of *genocide apologia* isn't an appropriate thing to platform, especially given the already slanted reporting of the last 2 years

As with so many problems that our government is trying to "fix" by destroying public services, the answer at this moment isn't to change anything about the specific system

It's not an education crisis, it's a material conditions crisis that has impacts on education

Where the fuck is Labour again tbh

Like all good if they don't want to release full policy yet, but they're barely pushing back against immensely destructive, antidemocratic, or overtly fascist announcements of the current government

Do they understand narrative or information strategies at all??

So suddenly this super-hawkish liberal is concerned about a Korean after doing everything in her power for the last 20 years to trigger disdain and hatred for the Korea Peace Process that this Korean Anglican priest no doubt supported with all her might. @maddow.msnbc.com should never be trusted.

This much I know about the changes to secondary education: While one in ten New Zealanders rely on food parcels to eat, and one in a thousand New Zealanders live rough, a huge number of young people will struggle to achieve their true potential whatever happens with NCEA.

Over 300,000 people crossed Sydney Harbour Bridge today in solidarity with Gaza.

Under pouring rain, they marched with pots and pans—symbols of Gaza’s hunger—demanding an end to the genocide and the blockade.

NZ Herald article excerpt from 31 July 2025:

David Seymour resurrects idea of migrants signing NZ ‘values statement’

Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour has suggested requiring migrants coming to New Zealand to sign a “values statement” should be Government policy.

He’s also spoken of how some people criticise immigration and promise to “get rid of it”, but then do nothing when they are in power.

Introducing... a values statement is not a new idea. The Act leader mentioned it in 2016 after an increase to New Zealand’s refugee quota, while NZ First leader Winston Peters at the time accused “toy MP” Seymour of stealing his party’s policy.

Seymour’s new comments come shortly after Peters told the Herald last week that people arriving here shouldn’t be able to “get out of the water or out of the sky” without the precondition that “they accept what we’re setting here”.

Peters said there was concern in some European countries about “people who have come there who don’t salute the flag, don’t salute the values of the country, don’t salute the people who were there before them, don’t respect the right to have your own religion”.

“These sorts of things are values that we need to stress. If you don’t subscribe to that, don’t come here,” he said.

Asked about immigration concerns on Newstalk ZB this week, Seymour noted that in 2016 he had made the point that “we should actually have a New Zealand values statement”.

Aotearoa already has a values statement: Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

But Seymour, Peters and their political forebears have been doing everything possible to undermine, breach, and erase it. They can get in the bin.

Review by Kent McClard in HeartattaCk #27 of the debut album by From Ashes Rise:

FROM ASHES RISE • Concrete and Steel LP

Thirteen awesome tracks from this extremely underrated hardcore band. The music is very reminiscent of His Hero Is Gone, but with higher pitched singing. All the songs are fantastic, and this LP will definitely get From Ashes Rise the credit they deserve. Totally fantastic hardcore from the
bowels of the South. An excellent record that will make their two out of print 7”s a must find. Honestly, this is really fucking good. For the life of me I can’t understand why From Ashes Rise isn’t much, much more popular. When I saw them play live they were awesome, and this record
is equally as impressive. KM (Great American Steak Religion??)

Review by Dogtowne in MRR #27 of Greg Sages’s album ‘Straight Ahead’.

Greg Sage – Straight Ahead

This Portland talent and brain of the WIPERS has filled this LP with ballads. Tough lyrics, as is his trademark, as well as strummin’ that ol’ geetar. I’ve always been one of Greg’s biggest fans and when I’m sad and need consolation, this will be on the turntable. I wouldn’t live without it. (Dog)

Greg Sage, of Wipers fame, released his debut solo album ‘Straight Ahead’ 40 years ago & it was reviewed in the August ‘85 issue of MRR. Not every song on the album does it for me, but The Illusion Fades, Lost in Space, and Keep On Keepin' On are absolutely epic tracks. Music in reply.

A very hot three-song release. “Seeing Through My Eyes” and “The Point of Agony” are especially good, capitalizing on metal punk with maxi-power and mini-solos plus sharp lyrics. (TY)

It’s August 1st, so I wanna highlight a few releases having an anniversary of sorts this month. In 1985, UK’s Broken Bones released the ‘Seeing Through My Eyes’ three song 7” (also released as a 10” with 2 extra songs). The 7” was reviewed in the Aug. 1985 issue of MRR. Music in reply.
