The full moon against a black sky with some clouds crossing it
Maybe the real eclipse was the clouds we met along the way...
Stood on a hill for 45min, got stung by nettles, saw only clouds, gave up and went home... and then I turned around in my front garden and there was the effing moon. About three minutes after the main eclipse ended. Typical ๐

Two waves clash into a big spray about 10m from the shore. The rest of the sea is very choppy around the railings that normally lead a set of steps down to the beach

(Sorry, my Catalan isn't good enough to reply!).
Explanation here - it was a jokey article about 'bocata culture' and the author argued that saying you were going for a bocata had a different vibe to saying you were going for a bocadillo. Very difficult to translate to English though!
Hello. I wrote a nice long essay about AI and this very strange moment where we're constantly told we're living in the dawn of a strange new future but the only thing that's actually clear is that everyone feels pretty unmoored and uncertain. I hope you'll read it
18.08.2025 21:21 โ ๐ 4459 ๐ 1433 ๐ฌ 152 ๐ 307The dreaded translation IIRC was a playful article about 'bocata culture'. So it had sentences that would translate literally as 'getting a sandwich isn't the same thing as getting a sandwich or making a sandwich...'
(I think I decided to leave the word 'bocata' in Spanish in the end)
I think, in Spain at least, bocata & bocadillo can both refer to a baguette-style sandwich (which in Ireland I'd call a roll). Bocata is more colloquial though, and I *think* usually refers to a large roll.
And sรกndwich or emparedado would be the two slices of bread with something in between kind.
Just realised I've reached that paradoxical time of upheaval that comes in every Irish woman's life... simultaneously too old and haggard to be the Rose of Tralee, and too young and sprightly to run for president ๐

I counted 7 in about 90min, despite the suburban light pollution and the big bright Sturgeon Moon. Only the second time I've ever seen them. Space is amazing (and a bit terrifying. But mostly amazing)
Barely an hour ago, Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif warned us all:
โIf this madness doesnโt end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its peopleโs voices silenced, their faces erased โ and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop.โ
Israel just killed him.
This episode gave me flashbacks to my hardest undergrad Spanish translation exam, which featured a text about why a 'bocata' is not a 'bocadillo' and not a 'sรกndwich' either. (All of those translate to 'sandwich' in an English dictionary)
I still can't order sandwiches in Spain without shuddering ๐
