09.02.2026 11:27 โ ๐ 126 ๐ 31 ๐ฌ 6 ๐ 0I really highly recommend listening to this with a housing policy academic โ while it in part deals with Irish government proposals, there's also more general thinking on how we should actually consider housing
if you want to skip to the juicy philosophical stuff, it's at 19:16 (lol ๐ฎ๐ช)
a committee in the EU parliament is today voting on some new rules on housing for the EU, and looks in danger of steering it in favour of developers instead of people who need a home
no universal right to housing, no focus on social housing, no standards to make houses cheaper to heat and cool
cefic is one of the biggest lobby groups in brussels, working for fossil companies to make sure we still use oil and gas even if we stop burning it for energy
petrochemicals โ plastics, fertilisers โ are the escape hatch of the oil and gas industry
these lobbyists make sure the EU supports them
I keep thinking about this tweet.
07.02.2026 11:29 โ ๐ 62 ๐ 14 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 1well ireland certainly won't convince anyone if it doesn't even hit the targets our governments have agreed to
I'd hardly say Germany has gone "all in" on this either
climate action (as in cutting emissions) has to be collective, but to convince anyone else to act you have to be willing to act yourself
ireland actually has a pretty high level of emissions per capita
this in a country where the government is deprioritising climate action

But default having a tv in your car is nuts
yeah it'd be good if police enforced the rules that already exist about dangerous driving before the government started making up new victim-blaming rules
