A friend referred to a can of diet soda as a “fridge cigarette” and now I’ll always think of them that way.

When you’re chronically ill, some people will treat you like you’re not dying “fast enough”.

They will be upset you’re surviving.

They will act like you must be “not that sick” or you would be dead.

Your literal survival will anger them.

No one prepares you for that. 🧵

If you find yourself experiencing schadenfreude, keep it to yourself. If you’re tempted to mock the way people grieve, just don’t.

We are all basically under a flash flood warning in central Texas. It’s not raining hard, but it’s incessant, which is deceptive and dangerous. As soon as a particular area hits saturation, ANY road/area can flash flood and be deadly, even in seemingly light rain. Best to stay home if you can.

In trial court the issue for me was about being able to hear and getting a good record. If I asked counsel to sit it was because their voice didn’t carry well and wasn’t being picked up by the table mics. Some folks managed to be able to stand and be heard. Some needed to be right on top of the mic.

10 years ago today, my friends George Harris and Jack Evans got married. Others will write eloquently about that day. I’ll just say, they shared a beautiful, loving life, and I am forever grateful they asked me to be a part of their ceremony.

I don’t understand folks who, upon reaching their wildest dreams, remain super angry at everyone about everything.

Wear bright, lightweight clothes. Linen clothes are great.

Take breaks during the hottest time of day at places with AC: movies, stores, restaurants.

If you’re stuck inside hiding in the AC, take outside breaks early in the am, or after the sun goes down.

Check on vulnerable friends & family.

Eat cold meals.

If you have to go in the heat, acclimate as best you can before exerting yourself.

If you have decent AC, keep windows and doors closed. Make sure ceiling fans are set for summer.

A cool towel around your neck helps to cool you down.

Tips for surviving the heat from a Texan:

Drink water, include electrolytes.

If you have no AC, go where it’s coolest, even if that’s outside.

If outside, stay in the shade & wear a wide-brimmmed hat. Wear white. Wear sunscreen.

I might have responded, “Pick up where you left off, dear.”

But, seriously cringe moment.

Everytime the power goes out, a small panic sets in as I remember that I essentially live in a desert that wouldn’t have a city in it without AC.

I don’t think we are meant to take in ALL the news, ALL the time.

Its axiomatic that the Dr. Frankensteins of the world will eventually lose control of their homemade monsters. Some of them will even regret having ever created them.

Having a good friend is essential for good mental health. Be intentional about nurturing and maintaining those relationships that keep you sane.
