Nature security assessment on global biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and national security This strategic assessment explores how global biodiversity loss and the collapse of critical ecosystems could affect the UKโ€™s resilience, security and prosperity.

An across-government technical assessment published today recognises that "nature is the foundation of national security" and that "every critical ecosystem is on a pathway to collapse". A rational response to this would be to get very serious about nature recovery.

I was 10 or 11yo when the IRA hunger strikes happened, too young to properly follow events.
Reading about it now for insight on Palestine Action hunger strikes it strikes me the news blackout is not because Palestine Action is proscribed, but because they know it will have public sympathy.

Dear David,

We are writing to express our concern about eight prisoners who took action in solidarity with Palestine in August 2024. Amu Gib, Qesser Zuhrah, Heba Muraisi, Jon Cink, Teuta Hoxha, Kamran Ahmed, Muhammad Umer Khalid and Lewie Chiaramello are all being held on remand: none has been convicted. They are all on hunger strike, some since 2 November, in protest at their prolonged pre-trial imprisonment, censorship of communications and alleged mistreatment in custody.

We share concerns about the length of time they have been detained without trial. Some of the protestors have already been imprisoned for over a year and we note the assessment by UN human rights experts that terrorism powers were misused to circumvent normal legal protections, with this being a potential cause of excessively long pre-charge detention (ref). We are also worried by reports about their treatment and support the call on you made in Early Day Motion 2386 (ref) to intervene urgently to ensure their treatment is humane and their human rights are upheld.

To that end, would you:

โ€ข	ensure the hunger strikers are not denied clinical monitoring or hospital access;
โ€ข	instigate an immediate review of the remand/bail decisions in these cases;
โ€ข	confirm that counter terror powers are not being misapplied to protest activity.

These protestors must also be guaranteed their right to a fair trial โ€“ the decision since their arrest to proscribe Palestine Action puts this seriously at risk. We would therefore like to know what measures you are putting in place to ensure such a vital cornerstone of our justice system is upheld, both in relation to the charges brought against these specific prisoners and more broadly in relation to offences committed by others acting in solidarity with Palestine.

Lastly, we urge you to meet with the families and loved ones of the prisoners on hunger strike โ€“ we understand you have not responded yet to representations they have made, and trust you will be oโ€ฆ

Alongside fellow Green MPs and Peers, I have written to the Justice Secretary to express my serious concern about the wellbeing and conditions of the hunger strikers.

Five of the strikers have now been hospitalised - it is clear Lammy must take urgent action to preventย tragedy.

Venezuela's oil exports surpass 1 million bpd for first time since 2020, data shows Venezuela's oil exports averaged 1.09 million barrels per day (bpd) in September, the highest monthly level since February 2020, according to shipping data and documents from state-run energy company PDVSA.

You'll be hearing plenty of lies and propaganda about Venezuela shipping a bazillion tons of drugs via tiny fishing boats (which, incidentally, would have to refuel at least six times to reach U.S. waters) and submersibles (!).

Just keep in mind: IT'S THE OIL.

For the first time ever, London has met legal limits for nitrogen dioxide.

When I became Mayor, we were told it would take 193 years. We did it 184 years earlier than expected.

Cleaner air means a healthier city and big savings for the NHS.

One of the ships - the Ohwayla - sails under a UK flag. Onboard are humanitarians with vital aid, demanding a humanitarian corridor.

The Labour government must act NOW to protect UK citizens.

US designates Colombia country 'failing to cooperate in drug war' For the first time in almost three decades Colombia loses its certification as a US ally in the war on drugs.

Wouldn't it be nice if the citizens and governments of the US and other Western nations for once looked to their own role in providing the demand for cocaine.

Dear Colleagues,

As backbench MPs in the governing party, you have a unique and vital ability to influence the decisions of our government. I know many of you share my deep concern at the scale of human suffering unfolding in Gaza. I am writing to urge you to use your position to press the government to live up to its legal and moral obligations, and to support the following measures without delay:

Enact a full arms embargo on Israel, including on components for F-35 fighter jets, and suspend all military cooperation with Israel.

Conduct and publish a comprehensive risk assessment of genocide in Gaza, in line with our obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Recognise the State of Palestine immediately, rather than treating recognition as a bargaining chip.

Set out how the UK will hold any nationals implicated in war crimes in Palestine to account under UK law.

Ban the importation of goods produced in illegal settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Deploy every diplomatic, legal, and economic instrument to secure an immediate and lasting ceasefire, the release of all hostages, unfettered humanitarian access into Gaza, and accountability for war crimes.

In January 2024, the International Court of Justice warned of a โ€œplausible riskโ€ of genocide in Gaza, a warning the government must take seriously. UN agencies describe Gaza as โ€œthe hungriest place on earth,โ€ where blockades and bombardment have cut off nearly all life-saving aid and over a hundred people, including children, have starved to death since this conflict began. Amnesty International has meticulously documented patterns of deliberate starvation, the systematic destruction of civilian homes and infrastructure, forced displacement of entire communities, and dehumanising rhetoric from political and military leadersโ€”actions that meet the Conventionโ€™s criteria for genocidal intent.
