Honestly, it’s just too hard not to be excited about science 😊

Life is tough. At high altitudes, it’s even tougher. Think rugged mountains, changing climate, and low oxygen.
So how do birds pull it off? πŸ¦β›°οΈ
Join me tomorrow, Aug 12, 2:15–2:30, Genomics 1, Grand F at #AOS2025 to find out!

Good birding this morning with friends visiting all the way from Nepal.
Showed off cardinals, flickers… and even a Mississippi Kite! @thebirdguy.bsky.social #AOS2025

Almost ready (slides pending!) for #AOS2025. Excited to catch up with friends, meet new ones, and spend the week rushing from one room to another. If you spot me in the wild, say hi!

There are bird strikes already reported from this airport. Fig D is where they were cleaning Steppe eagle remains from the runway. You would be surprised to know that EIA didn’t even report common birds you would see while you wait for your flight.

Detailed survey is ongoing. This is preliminary insights from what we already had from multiple years of birdwatching. More systematic analysis is needed for the risks prevention.

Vultures are casually protesting on the runway yet EIA didn’t bother to mention what vultures are there and how such risks could be mitigated.

Took a very very long time to publish as we wanted to highlight this when key discussions were happening with the authority. There are newer developments but EIA in Nepal πŸ‡³πŸ‡΅ has been a joke.

Risks of avian collision at the Pokhara Regional International Airport, Nepal - Environmental Monitoring and Assessment The recently inaugurated Pokhara Regional International Airport (PRIA) in western Nepal has raised concerns among conservationists regarding its environmental impact. To understand such concerns, this...

In our new work, we assess the EIA and provide preliminary insights into the risk of bird strikes at this airport. This is raptors hotspot of Nepal with Dumping sites, nests of threatened vultures nearby.

An international airport was recently built in Nepal but its environmental impact assessment didn’t even discuss the obvious presence of vultures. Concerning, isn’t it?

Looking at a bird flying in the sky, the Wright brothers dreamed of flying too and built the airplane.
Today, airplanes and birds share the sky, making bird strikes a real threat to planes, people, and birds alike.1/3 🧡

A Spiny Babbler chilling in a ticket up the side of a sheer hill that nearly killed me in Kathmandu, Nepal.

A Spiny Babbler chilling in a ticket up the side of a sheer hill that nearly killed me in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The only endemic bird of Nepal, a Spiny Babbler. This bird was a serious adventure to get--ended up pulling myself up the side of a ~70-80% grade via all of the vegetation to get to the spot where these were active.

@s-m-aguillon.bsky.social talks about the _iconic_ coloration of yellow and red shafted Northern flickers, museum specimens, and hybrids. We can use both historic museum specimens and modern sampling to see how clinal variation has shifted through time as the result of ecological change #WOS2025

I am looking for a MS student to take on a project. We have samples already collected, and there is opportunity for more field work. California resident is preferred (fees for non-resident and international students are too high IMO). Repost please.

The importance of so-called β€œstupid” questions in science is immense, often leading to unexpected discoveries. I talked about this, along with how undergraduate students can begin their journey in research, during a training program organized by Bird Conservation Nepal, Pokhara. #ornithology

Scatterplot showing positive correlation between avian wing bone length and temperature across ~1500 bird species, along with diagrams comparing wing bones with low versus high proportional length

Another unexpected angle on bird wing evolution: skeletal measurements suggest that wing bone length is shaped not only by aerodynamics of flight but also by thermoregulation (1/4)

🧡1/ Invasive species wreak havoc on island ecosystems, and the avian vampire fly (Philornis downsi) is no exception. It parasitizes GalΓ‘pagos birds, including Darwin’s finches, but how did it become such a successful invader? We used whole-genome sequencing to find out! πŸͺ°πŸ¦β€β¬›
