Our insurance costs (home, health and auto) have gone up substantially this year. The increase is equivalent to some people's mortgages. I don't know how people are surviving this. Talking a lifetime of frugality being erased by greed.

My phone's in the "won't hold a charge" phase. I've decided it's a feature, since it makes me set the phone down and prevents me from playing mindless games.

I mean, who wants to spend hundreds of dollars to get something slightly better?

It's not just "consumer smart" it reduces environmental waste, key materials are often mined in slave conditions. The whole tenor of the article is wrong - why is the economy so dependent on us engaging in mass waste?

I really liked the Ken Olsen article from Newsweek, way back when he argued marriage equality in the supreme court. Marriage is a commitment that strengthens communities and isn't substantially changed by the genders of the participants. It's a legal arrangement.

Really large theft is usually done with some kind of excuse. Think of the PPP loans during the pandemic. They got forgiven, but I don't recall a vote on it and a ton of money went to Congressional pockets. It's not illegal per say, but I hated it.

I think the point for me is that you want us to be upset about something that I'm not convinced has happened. Sure, it would be upsetting, but first I'd like an audit.

Frankly, I'd like a massive government audit from the last ten years. But as someone who audits--it's rarely what you think.

You understand why not using the typical one year for your accounting makes you look like you don't know about finances, right?

Pretending convenient ignorance is often just liars trying not to get caught.

Okay, no. The whole US economy is 30 Trillion. There's zero chance that one trillion is going to NGOs, so it's not possible for that much to be wasted. USAID alone was around $30 billion. So, waste would only be a small percentage of that.
