Many U.S. universities are dramatically reducingβor suspendingβPhD admissions for 26-27. Harvard & MIT, are scaling back their PhD intakes, up to 75%. Brown U. & U. Wash. paused admissions altogether in certain fields. This is due to frozen research grants & reduced support for graduate programs.

Arizona Rejects Compact
Arizona was 1 of 9 colleges offered preference for federal research funding if they overhaul admissisions & hiring, cap internatl enrollment, revise academics, stop criticism of conservatives, freeze tuition. MIT, Brown, Dartmouth, Penn, USC, Arizona & Virginia declined.

Been a rough year for federally funded scientists & I hate to add another tab to this spreadsheet. The shutdown has resulted in cancellation of 161 CSR study sections. π§ͺhttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lLEx14q7HKrlYahQYJaN6aHKpMqSMJwX4aenyL5g_ZU/edit?usp=sharing

University of Arizona also rejects, albeit in a conciliatory manner. No comments about academic freedom, just concern that preferential treatment by the government would be anti-merit. 7 of 9 initially contacted universities said no. president.arizona.edu/sites/defaul...

So how did NIDA get away with ignoring the Multi-Year Funding mandate?
Jeremy Bergβ¬ βͺ@jeremymberg.bsky.socialβ¬β¬
Here is NIDA They were relatively effective in maintaining R01 numbers with little or no multi-year funding, but substantially increased UG1, UG3, and U24 cooperative agreements.

4 Charts Break Down H-1B Visas & Higher Ed
Requiring employers pay $100,000 to secure an H-1B visa for foreign workers may imperil 1000βs of jobs at US colleges, which employ >16,000 workers (~5%) on H-1B visas. The H-1B program allows hire of foreign talent if domestic applicants canβt be found.

This may be the most important paper ever published about NIH funded research. What if NIH had been 40% smaller? Under that scenario, NIH-funded research on more than half of 557 drugs approved 2000-2023 would have never happened!
