Many U.S. universities are dramatically reducingβ€”or suspendingβ€”PhD admissions for 26-27. Harvard & MIT, are scaling back their PhD intakes, up to 75%. Brown U. & U. Wash. paused admissions altogether in certain fields. This is due to frozen research grants & reduced support for graduate programs.

U of A declines to sign Trump compact, will 'compete on merit' for funding University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella tells the Trump administration the U of A will compete on merit for federal funding, but agrees with many of the proposed changes in

…academic freedom, merit-based research funding, & institutional independence are foundational & must be preserved.
"As a result, the university has not agreed to terms outlined in the proposal, but instead submitted a Statement of Principles to the Dept of Education,"

University of Arizona also rejects, albeit in a conciliatory manner. No comments about academic freedom, just concern that preferential treatment by the government would be anti-merit. 7 of 9 initially contacted universities said no. president.arizona.edu/sites/defaul...

Authors of 'Science Under Siege' warn of concerted effort to discredit science From its embrace of dubious research about autism, its skepticism over vaccines and its wholesale rejection of the consensus about climate change, the Trump administration has set off alarm bells within the scientific community. William Brangham spoke with two prominent researchers about "Science Under Siege," their new book chronicling what they argue is a concerted war on science. So how did NIDA get away with ignoring the Multi-Year Funding mandate?
Jeremy Berg‬ β€ͺ@jeremymberg.bsky.social‬‬
Here is NIDA They were relatively effective in maintaining R01 numbers with little or no multi-year funding, but substantially increased UG1, UG3, and U24 cooperative agreements.

4 Charts Breaking Down H-1B Visas and Higher Ed More than 16,700 employees at colleges and universities got H-1B visas approved in fiscal year 2025, but they are concentrated at 100 large research institutions.

4 Charts Break Down H-1B Visas & Higher Ed
Requiring employers pay $100,000 to secure an H-1B visa for foreign workers may imperil 1000’s of jobs at US colleges, which employ >16,000 workers (~5%) on H-1B visas. The H-1B program allows hire of foreign talent if domestic applicants can’t be found.

This may be the most important paper ever published about NIH funded research. What if NIH had been 40% smaller? Under that scenario, NIH-funded research on more than half of 557 drugs approved 2000-2023 would have never happened!
