Perhaps the more interesting dimension there is the corner that she's ultimately painting him into - either speak out against separatism because of the national interest, or support it and watch conservative support in the ROC evaporate.

"authoritarian libertarian" is shorthand for "my rights and opinions ahead of yours".

Libertarianism itself is political philosophy for people who want to think they have something intelligent to say. (No - I have no respect for it ever since hearing Senator Rand a few years ago)

I object to simply using the “legal definition” here. That definition is decades old and presupposes violent insurrection. Its authors did not foresee the combination of a “mad king” and his henchmen conspiring with a group of delusional nitwits who are willing to use subterfuge to get their way.

IMO, Alberta’s have convinced themselves that a bunch of utter falsehoods are in fact true and built their identity on them.

Quebec’s separatists have their own fictions, the degree to which they can be considered delusional is different than Alberta’s.

It makes some very interesting arguments as to how the Charter should be interpreted regarding S33.

They are novel arguments, but there is a surprising amount of background reasoning that makes a lot of sense.

I remember the late 70s version of these fools - Elmer Knutsen, Doug Christie (look him up sometime - he was a piece of work). Compared to today's separatists, they were masters of reason and rhetoric. Today's lot are a bunch of Temu bullies trained in Gish-Galloping.

When asked about separatism, Smith talks about these people having "legitimate grievances" - not once have I ever heard a separatist raise a grievance that isn't twisting the reality beyond the breaking point. Not once.

Smith is a liar, separatists are a bunch of deluded fools.

I encourage you to read the Attorney General of Canada's argument to the SCC in "Montreal English School Board v Quebec Attorney General".

If the court adopts this, it will substantially curtail the (ab)use of the NWC
