Amazing Friday out on the fjord - 8 Atlantic cod tagged! πβοΈ With sediment dumping and hydropower changes planned in the area, weβre collecting crucial before data to see how cod behaviour and habitat use shift as the fjord environment changes.

Sharks are over 550 species that come in many shapes and sizes, from the minuscule 20 cm long dwarf lanternshark to the almost 100 times longer whale shark. Amazing! (but not a surprise, which was ruined by their names).

Anchoring of the PIT antenna to the riverbed during low river discharge
Picture of the river Nidelva in Southern Norway with NORCE LFI employee snorkeling to make sure that the antenna is well secured and deployed
We've installed a PIT antenna in Nidelva to track returning Atlantic salmon smolts tagged last year through our #NFR_HITLice project. Smolts were infested with sea lice before release. Low discharge makes drilling the antenna to the riverbed easier, still a river with 3β4Β°C makes it quite tough!

Drivers of behaviour and spatial ecology of the small spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula)
Shark populations have suffered dramatic declines across the world as a result of overfishing. Marine protected areas (MPAs) can help restore overfished populations; however, their effectiveness la...
Acoustic telemetry reveals the small spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) is most active at night and relies on inshore waters, especially females. Small MPAs may not fully protect them. Larger MPAs and nighttime fishing bans could improve conservation. π¦π
