"The technical capacity to simplify tax filing exists. The government built it. Users loved it. The Trump administration killed it at the request of the same industry that has been blocking tax simplification for 20 years."

Covering Jamal Khashoggi's murder was one of the most disturbing things I've worked on. Hearing Trump say he was "extremely controversial" and people "didn't like him" is chilling. Hard to take any other way than he thinks there is moral ambiguity in the murder of a journalist.

This is what happens when science gives you very clear warnings but you stick your fingers in your ears and go "LALALALA".

You can't vaccinate against reality.

E.P.A. Rule Would Drastically Curb Protections for Wetlands

In a win for polluters, the Trump regime proposed a rule to limit the EPA’s authority to regulate pollution in wetlands and waterways. This would strip federal protections from 55 million acres of wetlands (85% of all wetlands nationwide!), threatening lots of people's drinking water.

This. And for me, some of my rarely selling titles are among my favorite things I’ve ever written. The Wild trilogy, for instance, or Memory.

i'd say it did. the public put a group of thieves, vandals and extremists in office last november and they promptly went about destroying everything that might work to limit their ability to loot, steal and inflicting pain on the people they hate

No, because the printed version is from my former publisher. I hold the rights now, but I'm not planning to bring out a print edition anytime soon. The market just doesn't support it. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Dems should say this right now, loudly and clearly: Anyone who is trusting Donald Trump, of all people, when he says what he’s directing you to do is lawful and that you’ll be protected later may be putting themselves in a very precarious position. 6/

NEW: We’ve uncovered the first known example of taxpayer money flowing from DHS to businesses controlled by Kristi Noem’s allies and friends.

It’s part of a money trail that’s been shrouded in secrecyβ€”and involves $220 million, a mysterious Delaware LLC & a horse named Gill.

First, the frogs died. Then people got sick. An emerging area of research is uncovering hidden links between nature and human health.

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

** I'm old enough to remember when Priority Mail was an excellent service that could get a package to Hawaii in 3 to 4 days.

Yesterday I learned USPS Priority Mail can be put on a ship to transit between the west coast and Hawaii, thus explaining why packages disappear from tracking for days/weeks**β€”never mind the estimated delivery date!

boosting this again because honestly I am proud of this near future and very political sf story, the illustration by Juan Bernabeu is exceptional, and big shout out to the editor Oliver Dougherty for having such a keen eye.

Another Destructive Beetle Is Spreading, Killing HawaiΚ»i’s Trees Big Island farmers want the state to tackle the Queensland longhorn beetle before it spreads to the rest of the state and wreaks havoc like the coconut rhinoceros beetle.

Another invasive species wreaking havoc on Hawaii’s food supply. We need to emulate Aotearoa’s (New Zealand) bio security procedures.

It is very clear the gutting of Teen Vogue is about silencing their excellent political coverage. Corporations want you uninformed and shut off from meaningful journalism. And they’re staggeringly successful at it so far.

it's time for journos to start asking Johnson meta questions

"Speaker, on 5 occasions last week you said 'I haven't seen it' when asked about news events w/big implications for public policy. Do you ever read the news, and do you agree it's problematic for the Speaker to be so woefully uninformed?"

A red bird visited me in the hospital
Against the early morning window reflections
The window looking out only on the darkness between two buildings
It perched on the inside
As if a reflection itself
Storybook bird, long jaunt of tail feathers, pirouette turn of wings
Glossy, darkling red
A curl of claws on a perch, some tree branch in an other where
A dark eye regarded me

In the deep of its gaze, intimate, amused recognition
sharing the joke with me
A wink from that elsewhere where a part of me perches, too
