Artwork by David Sandum in Norway. Title: ’Moonlight’ Medium: Mixed media: Pastel/watercolor pencils/oil pastel on 300 mg black watercolor paper. Size: 70x50 cm (27.5 x 19.6 inch) Year: 2025 Artist’s note: My 3rd large scale work on black paper. With this work, I am taking the technique further by adding highlights and certain areas with Carandache oil pastel sticks. The moon and light blue areas around it in particular. Also in the water reflection. I keep wanting to make the colors pop more and constantly turn off the light in the studio to see if they are bright enough. It is amazing to see the difference between daylight or under electric light. The photo in this post was taken in the evening on a cloudy day, which I have found renders the best true representation. Yet in a gallery under a spotlight, the colors will sing even more! I often discuss the difficulty of photographing your work with my artist friends. It is an issue of great worry for me, and I always tell my collectors to frame these works behind anti-reflective glass and to hang them in proper light. Some say that a work should carry itself in any kind of light. True I suppose, but I promise you, if you would walk into any art museum without proper lighting, you would get an entirely different experience. #art #mixedmedia #expressionism #blueskyart #pastel

Landscape format in bright acrylics on canvas. View down a slightly curving street. Buildings on left side are 3 storeys of pink, then orange, then yellow, with shop fronts at street level. Rest of left side is hidden as street curves behind a pale grey gable. Right side is aligned with viewing point so buildings are barely visible thin strips of yellow, blue, red, brown, and in foreground on right there is a high grey stone wall with flecks of red, blue and yellow in between the stones. Road surface is a bold pink with yellow box markings along bottom edge of painting; footpaths are bright yellow with blue kerbs. The sky is a painterly yellow. At the end of the street a short distance beyond a front-facing purple building with yellow corner-stones and window arched surrounds, is a rounded green hill with dark hedgerows. Signed bottom right in red on yellow pavement, Liam Daly
Go on, have a #painting. "Bandon, Oliver Plunkett Street" came out of a time I was cycling around west Cork in a silly sort of happy state such is the joy the colour of southwest Ireland can bring. #SpeirGorm #ArtYear #BlueSkyArtShow

My largest watercolor/pastel pencil work to date! (Swipe right for detail photos) Artist explanation: This was an intense piece to do! I have seldom felt such adrenaline and focus drawing the lines impromptu. The difference from before was the larger size and broader lines. I needed to work in stages and get rest between sessions, which lasted 3-5 hours each (five sessions total). The greatest cause to pause: Pastel pencils are mostly permanent and I needed to be certain of my color choices and composition. I felt a rush each time I continued, always contemplating the Matisse quote, ”Creativity takes courage.” I learned two new things creating this: 1) In rare cases, it is possible to go from light to dark with pastel pencils with certain colors, but never dark to light. If done, I should use the same color palette. This seems self-explanatory, but I have been so focused on plain surfaces. The only place where I applied this was by the horizon line that I first made yellow, but then felt that it drew too much attention. Instead, I made it green by mixing the same blue as in the sky. I then added light turquoise above it, which created a more harmonious effect. 2) Applying two such layers is fine, but not three, and it should only be applied in a few places or it will affect ”the cleaness” of the whole. Black can be added over certain areas with too much color, but it will be a different black than the paper. Keep it clean David! I will create more work in this size. It feels like a new and exciting stage of my learning process. It will also help to make the pieces less dark from a distance. It has been a goal of mine for many years and I continue to experience with new methods, including mixing layers of gouache with watercolor pencils, and wet oil pastel sticks over pastel pencils. This was a very complex print to make, combining variations of acid on the copper plate for different tones, intaglio, and sugar aquatint.
This was a memory from when I visited Victoria Falls in the NW Scottish Highlands, 2019.

https://www.erinhanson.com/portfolio/paso-robles-vines This painting of Paso Robles vines captures California wine country at its best. Perched high atop a hillside in Paso Robles, I could see far over the vineyard-covered rolling hills all around me. Laying brush strokes side by side without layering, Erin Hanson re-created the beauty and wonder of this vista in her contemporary, colorful impressionist style. This work is available for purchase as an original oil painting, 3D Textured Replica, or canvas print. Paso Robles Vines Original Oil Painting by Erin Hanson, 2024 24 x 30 in

This afternoon, I sat alone in quiet at my studio. I felt like drawing but had no idea what to do? On my counter was a white sheet of thick watercolor paper. My eyes fixed on it with trepidation. A white empty space can be most frightening! It’s been a while since I’ve worked with positive space with drawings/mixed media, having gotten used to black paper and negative space (in a sense, carving out the motif). Deciding to give it a go, I sat down in my chair and closed my eyes, trying to connect with a motif. I finally settled on a scene that I was familiar with to focus on the technique itself. «Do something relief like,» I told myself, contemplating art nouveau. A few hours later this was the result. I have no idea if it turned out any good, but I am proud of taking the leap! I included some detail photos in the post to show the mark-making. Size: 22.9 x 30.5 cm (9x12 inches). Medium: Carandache pastel/watercolor pencils and wet oil pastel sticks (for a few highlights). #art #mixedmediadrawing #creative #artprocess #expressionism #symbolism #artist #davidsandum #scandinavianart
