Philosophy and anxiety is the worst mix because I can always win the argument with the therapist and by which I mean, anxiety wins

Therapeutic moral deism remains a great descriptor for American Christianity except the moral bit just means moralistic (on occasion) but never actually a deliberation about ethics.

It’s probably not untrue that these morons larping as combat tacticians are both frauds and men who have leeched off of the labor of those they consider inferiorβ€”but they’re also acclimating themselves to the taste of innocent blood, because even for them none of this is normal nor sensible.

In America it always matters who is dying more than it matters that someone is deadβ€”characterizing the resistance in Minneapolis in military terms is the deliberate construction of a narrative which permits and legitimizes the use of deadly force against moms and nurses.

A good forum discussion on what is obscured in prevailing debates about migration and the class politics which are actually at stake.

Supreme Court oral argument this morning, in sum

Sotomayor: you're asking us to destroy the foundation of government (derogatory)

Gorsuch: you're asking us to destroy the foundation of government (complimentary)

Ostensibly, both are reacting to critiques of foundationalism. But they also want to insulate themselves from the sexual and cultural pluralism emerging out of the 1960s and the bogey-man of postmodernism.

So both reformed epistemology and post-liberal theology emerge during the late 70s/early 80s. The influential figure for the former is Thomas Reid, the founder of what became known as Scottish Common Sense philosophy, while the latter makes use of Wittgenstein’s philosophy of language.

Not that there ever was serious or rigorous engagement with either philosophical traditionβ€”as always, better to observe what a reactionary is doing with a concept/tradition rather than be distracted by simple engagement or utilization.

It wasn’t exactly subtle at the time, but it’s painfully clear now that white evangelical reformed appropriation of Scottish common-sense realism and the Wittgenstein concept of language games were both reactionary attempts to contest the emerging social consensus around sexuality and gender norms.

Can’t have a robust sense of what it means to love without some orientation towards what is true and goodβ€”together this entails not leaving people to remain as they are, but also respecting their inherent dignity. As always the problem of politics is the question of what it means to be a society.

Full colour comic strip page. First panel says across the top "Calvin and Hobbes, by Watterson". The rest of the panel is of a pterodactyl flying over the sea.
Panel 2: a gigantic sea creature emerges out of the sea, snapping at the little pterodactyl. The predator shouts: CALVIN, PAY ATTENTION!!
Panel 3 shows us reality - Calvin is at his school desk looking surprised as the teacher shouts at him: "we're studying Geography! Now what state do you live in?"
Panels 4 and 5 show the same little scene, as Calvin answers "denial", and the teacher walks away: "sighhhh... I don't suppose I can argue with that..."
Panel 6 is long, running across the bottom of the page, and almost all of it is blue, open sky - freedom - and, on the far right, the pterodactyl carries on flying.

Forty years ago today, Calvin & Hobbes was first published. It's all fabulous but, as time went on, Bill Watterson decided he was going to make his Sunday pages the most gorgeous, creative, and varied of all. This is one of my favourites, partly for the use of the looooong final panel.

One thing that always amuses me when I see citations of Pentecostalism as being the fastest growing Xian movement of the late 20th century/early 21st century is how incredibly diverse regional expressions are, to the point that many of these groups don’t acknowledge the other’s legitimacy.

Mega-church styled American Pentecostalism is almost entirely an attempt to occupy the corner of the market which offers a religious and individualistic psychological therapeutic, complete with technologies of optimization designed for appropriating conservative and reactionary ideologies.
