This is without a doubt a bottom-to-top problem. The high school boy who hates education? It's because he thinks learning is a girl thing, that it's gay. The guy who recoils with rage at vegetarian food? It's because it's gay. He votes hard right because they promise violence? Manly.

Hatred of women and femininity is at the heart of conservative male politics.

Most of what they do comes down to, "does this make me seem GAY or like a REAL MAN?"

Universal healthcare, democratic norms, following rules, being decent, empathy, etc, these are all coded as feminine and thus wrong.

Just removed the bits of "write-for-hire" stuff from my professional-facing stuff, I am now firmly an Editor only.

I still find it terrifying how 4chan ultimately laid the blueprint for modern conservatives. 4chan lead to Gamergate, which lead to Steve Bannon and Trump, and now the bulk of the Republica party talks and reasons exactly like 14 year old 4chan /pol/ users. It's so surreal to me.

Also, worthwhile to say: if you're a fanfic author, and it's a fandom I am well-acquainted with, or you're an unpublished author with original works, I do offer feedback and (sometimes) free editing if I have open availability. Friends and my clients do come first though.

It's a shame "don't feed the trolls" never really took as an internet adage.

The amount of shameless grifters that just kept saying abhorrent shit, who built entire careers off of well-meaning people dunking them, is really much too high.

It has been quite humbling to see someone go from beginner/amateur level, to now about to be professionally published. I watched their prose go from "needs a lot of work" to "far better than anything I could ever do." I've been writing a lot longer, too.

It really is incredible.

Fast forward to a week ago. For the past 1.5 months, they've been working with a new editor. They've finally finished their novella. The new editor definitely did sharpen their writing even more. Cherry on top? They just got a publishing deal.

They turned in two shorter works to me months ago, 5500 and 7500 words, just about. I finished them--and they needed next to no editing. Minor fixes. They were breathtaking.

Full refunds, I wished them well, praised their ability and told them they were well beyond me.

I bring this up because I started working with a writer about four years ago. Early attempts by them were raw, promising, but all over the place. A year in, they were doing much better. The past year has been nothing but fire. It's been a rapid, breathtaking evolution.

This does mean I end up working for free and (usually) losing a client, but when the writing is that good, they need to move on to an editor who can truly elevate them. If the prose and ideas are way better than what I can put out, I can't help them much. Feels wrong to take their money.

I have a policy where, if I am hired to help develop or refine a work, and it's so good and well-realized that the only editing it needs is grammar, spelling, punctuation, or some style fixes, I do exactly that, fully refund the writer, and suggest they find a better editor.

I do paid editing on the side these days, it's no longer my main career. That means I get a lot of freedom to pick clients and who I want to work with, and what I want to work on. It also means my policies are what I want, and I don't feel bad about missing opportunities.

One sign that I've matured as a person is reading excellent writing and instead of fuming with anger towards the writer, celebrating and accepting how great they are. I used to be so bitter at times.
