Science, art, and sports... I can do one well, one passably, and one not at all. I'll post all 3. #proteomics #MassSpec #orioles

I’m getting texted pics from my friends in MT and it was warmer there today than it was here. Grrrr

While I understand the reasons behind the change, I am decidedly not a fan. For years I’ve mapped to uniprot when dealing with bacterial or viral proteomes due to the painful redundancy with NCBI, but this makes working with strain differences painful.

Laugh or cry, I choose laughter

A fellow furloughed coworker posted this. Laugh so you don’t cry.

Fixable and so much cheaper than a plumber. Hell the toilet flapper and float is easy too. I didn’t have shop but I had a research & engineering lab in high school that had us design and build our catapults etc, so between that and being a theater geek I learned power tools.

So, is it mole day 10/23 or mole minute 6:02 am on 10/23? Maybe mole second/fraction of a second? … And this is when I fully grasp the crazy that is my brain on furlough.

I can see that. I read them and they are often my initial filter, but that may not be the case for a job that can be easily described on a cv or resume. For what I’m looking for, AI usually stands out in an unfavorable way

It is one of the most uncomfortable things to write. Glad you have a reason to, but I really understand hating the process.

Adjusting to the furlough by reading all the fun science I have bookmarked over the last year. Also, I’m really bad at this not being alllowed to work thing

Female umpire Jen Pawol takes field, breaks MLB barrier Pawol received a louder ovation than the other three umpires when their names were announced before the game's first pitch.

Jen Pawol has made MLB history as the first female umpire to work a regular-season game.

The moment completed a journey that took Pawol more than 1,200 minor-league games β€” and took women more than a century. πŸ”—:

From an unhearlded draft pick from a small college to a hyped up prospect and Adam Jones successor to major major struggles and a demotion to AA.

... to a fan favorite and a future Orioles hall of fame induction.

I'll be there the day they honor you at Camden Yards.

Thanks Ced 🧑

UrΓas has steadily become one of my favorite players the last few years by stepping up and playing fantastic defense with timely hitting. I’ll miss seeing in an O’s uniform, and wish they gotten more for him given he’s not a rental. Grrrrr

Did I pack days ago because I knew this week was going to be crazy with work? Yes… did I change up my packing strategy at 11:30 the night before? Also yes. It was inevitable

Here’s a great way to find and support Public Media stations

Some of the Alaska stations have lost over 90% of their revenue.

I always work in a version of a caprese when the tomatoes are good and the basil is fresh. I’ll also do something like a light veggie tart or a salad with veggies and cous cous or orzo.

I have annoying timing this year… leaving the DMV the day before ASMS instead of taking advantage of proximity. At least a member of my team can still give a talk despite some administrative roadblocks earlier this year. :/

Somehow I don’t think she’ll follow the $20/occasion -$50/year gift limit and will forget meals count.

Hell I co-chaired a trainee seminar series when I was a post-doc and someone in the Director’s office emailed to verify the cookies being provided weren’t being bought with federal funds

For me paragraph 1 & 3 are generic who are you etc, and thanks for giving me consideration.

Paragraph 2 is the big one. Things like β€œas you can see in my cv I’ve done x and y which directly translates to this opportunity in z way”. It’s a roadmap of why you’re perfect out of 100 applicants

I wouldn’t be a scientist without #NSF. REU programs taught me both what types of science I liked and didn’t (and as a trainee that 2nd is important). I was also lucky to have my PhD largely funded by NSF. The ramifications of what’s happening today will echo for decades

And this is what I get for reading out of order. Glad it’s back. A strike a few years ago actually resulting in a pipe break and flood at my parent’s place. Not fun

I pay attention to the measurements when I order for just this reason. Also front zip is much better for me since I can get some wiggle room

Check the locking ability of the zipper and you should be good. I have both long and short sleeved and only have had issues with one
