A pat of golden butter skated across the steaming slice of bread.
My mouth watered.
As she handed me the slice, she said,

She placed the smooth ball of dough in a ceramic bowl and covered it with a damp cloth. I was imagining the golden crust and pillowy center, when—
“Praying for it to hurry up, right?”—she interrupted last calling my buffet of thoughts.
Busted.
However, a mere 3 hours later…my prayer was answered.

The BAKER stood at the floured countertop, folding and kneading the raggy mound of dough with a hypnotic rhythm.
The heels of her palms pressed it down, out, then back.
