Last week I attended the @isanet.bsky.social anual conference in Chicago. This was my first time participating in this important event and I was fortunate to share a panel with esteemed scholars. It was a rewarding experience to listen to my fellow panelists and learn about South Korea.

1/ The impeachment proceedings against President Yoon are reaching their conclusion.

The Constitutional Court must determine if his December martial law declaration violated South Korea’s democratic order.

Here are the key questions the court must consider:

1/ I've obtained the 101-page indictment against President Yoon Suk Yeol detailing the December 3, 2024 martial law incident. He's charged with leading an insurrection (내란우두머리).

Here's a breakdown of the allegations:

Yoon became the first sitting president to be arrested and tried. While South Korea has already sent several former presidents to prison, Yoon’s case is particularly unique.

Yoon has been arrested on charges of leading an insurrection. However, an interesting legal debate surrounds his charges. In Korea, insurrection and military rebellion are distinct crimes, with differing penalties under the law.

9/ What makes this particularly alarming is how a far-right group openly embracing symbols of authoritarian violence gained official platform through a ruling party lawmaker at the National Assembly, making a dangerous escalation.
