That's interesting. I was publishing in microbiology and infection control journals. Thankfully my employer was ok with paying the fee. But the journals I was looking at posted their fees on their websites, so I could compare beforehand. Some journals were more $$ than others for open access

Usually they charge for access to the article. So most journals, if they're offering open access to the article, will charge the submitter to cover their costs. This "open access" fee varies, but it's usually a few thousand. It also means more ppl will read it though
