Why Are Plans for This Alabama Data Center So Hush-Hush? Officials in Bessemer, Alabama, are mum on Project Marvel, a proposed data center the size of 18 Walmart Supercenters.

I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that all these data centers are going into communities that have been historically targeted for exploitation and have the least amount of civic power wielded by the people living there.

The nazis themselves were not some clever masterminds where everything they did went perfect. They were also comical idiots who did ridiculous things, like invading Russia in the winter.

They gained power because the opposition couldn’t understand that the fascists were not rational agents.

The violence isn't equal in a material or moral way. Gaza is occupied territory where they've been under attack for decades now. The basic necessities of human life have been intentionally and systematically denied to them for just as long. They have the right to resist, violently or otherwise.

Add to all that the multiple sources that have surfaced in the last 2 years that show Israel knew it was going to happen and did nothing to stop or mitigate it. In fact they did all they could to make sure they came out of it as sympathetic as possible.

Additionally, the mandatory IDF service and reserve status means many of those "civilians" weren't. Not really. They were armed, military trained, and one phone call away from being active duty. And they chose to live as human shields next to the world's only open air prison.

I have to disagree.

The people living in the Gaza border towns are there as human shields. Israel put those settlers there on purpose for that explicit reason. Maybe some didn't know, but most did. The IDF has also admitted to targeting Israelis under the Hannibal protocol on that day.

Absolutely. He's going to win, barring fascist fuckery. I hope he can get his reforms through because they seem like they will actually help a lot of people in his city. Might inspire similar action in places like Chicago, L.A., Houston, etc. He can't take down capitalism as mayor of NYC.

Same here. If we packed the entire government with candidates like him from local to federal we might have a chance at something better in our lifetimes, but it's unlikely. He's like a Noam Chomsky or Bernie. They're a great entryway into more radical understanding, but not the thing itself.

Religious practitioners were exempt from the bans, and they have continued to provide most conversion therapy, according to researchers who track it. But the bans, the legal historian Marie-AmΓ©lie George has argued, created β€œa social norm against conversion therapy writ large,” which influenced even the practitioners not directly regulated by them.

LGBT rights groups have recently made bans on conversion therapy, a
practice intended to reduce or eliminate a person’s same-sex sexual
attractions, a primary piece of their legislative agenda. However, the
statutes only apply to licensed mental health professionals, even though
most conversion therapy is practiced by religious counselors and lay
ministers. Conversion therapy bans thus present a striking legal question:
Why have LGBT rights advocates expended so much effort and political
capital on laws that do not reach conversion therapy’s primary providers?
Based on archival research and original interviews, this Article argues that
the bans are significant because of their expressive function, rather than
their prescriptive effects. The laws’ proponents are using the statutes to
create a social norm against conversion therapy writ large, thus
broadening the bans’ reach to the religious practitioners the law cannot
directly regulate. LGBT rights groups are also extending the bans’
expressive message to support the argument that sexual orientation is
immutable and to reverse a historical narrative that cast gays and lesbians
as dangerous to children. These related claims have been central to gay
rights efforts for much of the twentieth century and continue to shape
LGBT rights battles. While the expressive effects of the bans are important,
the laws and the campaign around them may have a negative effect. LGBT
rights organizations working on the laws do not distinguish between
conversion therapy efforts aimed at changing sexual orientation and those
targeting behavior. This is troubling, not only because it fails to
acknowledge the needs of same-sex attracted individuals who wish to live
in accordance with their religious beliefs, but also because it reinforces a
limited view of gay identity. Many within the LGBT movement contest the
identity model that legal advocates have championed, and that conception

The New York Times exists at this point to launder hatred for trans people. Today's coverage includes a citation to this law review article that says conversion therapy bans are anti-religious discrimination and it's not illegal to ban queer behavior, only queer identity. πŸ™ƒ

So stop playing into their narrative. Be clear about who the good guys and the bad guys are, no matter fucking what.

Yes, they'll use whatever they can. They'll also say a nonviolent protest was violent. They'll also beat you and arrest you and then say you hit them first (as police traditionally have at protests). I'm not saying some actions won't be used against people, I'm saying that narrative happens anyway.

07.10.2025 18:12 β€” πŸ‘ 319    πŸ” 42    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 3

Beyond advocating, maybe get off your asses and show us how it's done. Stop lecturing people in motion about how to avoid outcomes that they unleash on us NO MATTER WHAT WE DO.

Advocate for the tactics you believe are powerful and effectiveβ€”we probably agree about those. But stop preemptively scapegoating the same people that Trump scapegoats for his fascist violence. Only this administration is to blame for its violence. It was already planned.

Are you starting to get it? He was always going to hit us. You will not change the math by insisting that people assume some magical form of perfect victimhood that somehow reels in a monster. That's not real. And I am so sick of hearing it.

07.10.2025 17:51 β€” πŸ‘ 659    πŸ” 108    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 1

He was always going to do this. Chicagoans have not rioted, so the administration just lied and said we have. We have not attacked ICE agents, so they just lied and said we did. There was no chaos here, so they created chaotic scenes by attacking people and filmed that shit.

07.10.2025 17:49 β€” πŸ‘ 889    πŸ” 208    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 5

Y'all who keep lecturing protesters to "not give them an excuse" need to pause for a minute. Imagine yourself telling a DV victim, "Be sure not to mouth off or make any mistakes so he won't hit you. Don't give him an excuse! It's what he wants!" That's what you fools sound like.

I also just want to say that America has a long history of lying about how violent and dangerous Black men are to fit agendas. Jay, Aaron, Paul, et al are pretty directly engaged in white supremacy bullshit.

They just called a pacifist Black man a dangerous predator because they don't like him

07.10.2025 18:20 β€” πŸ‘ 80    πŸ” 21    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Link, a pacifist, did not threaten or wish death on anyone, and it is absurd and embarrassing for Jay to try to spin it that way. I called Link the Mr Rogers of Bluesky in 2023 and nothing has changed.

This would be like Congress imprisoning Mr Rogers after he testified and asked not to nix funding

07.10.2025 18:16 β€” πŸ‘ 92    πŸ” 17    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 2

Jay was furious Link asked her to be a moral agent and so did the closest thing she could to killing him, and figured out a way to lie about him being the violent one.

07.10.2025 18:13 β€” πŸ‘ 83    πŸ” 10    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

β€œI don’t wish death on Jay, I wish for her and her team to grow a conscience. I disagree with the decision and how it was handled. My account was taken down without any explanation for almost a full day in what can only be viewed as a retroactive ban.” grow a conscience is why Link was banned

That's also how a lot of the more draconian Christian denominations in the US treat kids in their churches and then we wonder why sexual abuse is so rampant in them.

SUPPORT TRANS PUERTO RICANS

We learned a few days ago that on 10/6, Medicaid in Puerto Rico will stop covering all medications used for gender-affirming care.

True Self Foundation has established an emergency fund to cover the cost of GAC for trans Puerto Ricans, but they need more funding to meet the vast need.

horrific whiplash in PR, which just several years ago was explicitly affirming our care had to be covered. but already this year PR enacted a criminal ban up to age 21 w/ a 15yr prison sentence, and now this. here's the donation page if you're able to pitch in:

Banning controversy reveals Bluesky’s federation isn’t there yet Bluesky’s protocol is so complicated that not even the biggest alternative network has figured out how to become independent
