Hello BlueSky! I'm still alive! Life was busy for a while but at the very least I can say that it was good! I've joined a small indie gamedev team and we've started working on a cool project together. I hope to be able to share some progress in the future!

My goal for this year is to 'finish' a tiny game, to start taking gamedev more seriously, and to get my degree in software development.

#gamedev and others, please tell me your goals of 2025!

Holiday season is over and my studies are starting again. On the one hand I'm sad that we're having to get back to the daily grind, but holy shit I haven't felt productive this past month.

It's readable, but not easily! I definitely like it from a stylistic point, but it doesn't feel too user friendly. The middle word definitely is the hardest. I think it reads item? I personally think that it would be easier to read without the border, or if the border was more circular.

The only downside being that as a European I'll be seeing all the news in the morning... I'll try my best to stay spoiler free until I can watch the full show!

Is Bluesky hyped for the #gameawards? I for one am looking forward to it! It's always something I look forward to around this time.
If the rumors are to be believed we might get some incredible reveals!

You'd think that, but I saw a thread the other day of someone wanting to be a game developer who only played FIFA. Not trying to throw shade at the person, however broadening your horizon as a gamedev is not only worthwhile, but I'd almost say it's required if you plan on making a game yourself.

After messing around for some time, I was able to expand the wordTime and event system! I now have seasons (well, at least in theory) and years working! Small win for today!

That's a great route to take, I'm actually doing the same thing! There's so much to learn from both disciplines, and they really strengthen each other. Good luck on your journey!

Right?? Kinda missing the whole solarpunk theme, but that'll come later I guess!

How are people able to do #pixelart ๐Ÿ˜ญ I've been bashing my head against #aesprite for a solid part of my day and this little goober is the best I could muster hahahah I'm trying to create a little solarpunk companion robot for the player, but art wise no luck... Anyways, meet Sprout! ๐ŸŒฑ

I personally thought that stardew valley was pretty well paced! Never times it but it always felt way longer! I'll have a think about shortening the timespan somewhat, to around 20-25 minutes. I think relatively short days fit a farming game well, allowing for easier play sessions.

06.12.2024 15:41 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I'll keep it in mind! Do you have any examples of games that let you adjust time related settings via an options menu? I'm aware that stardew valley lets you skip through a day by simply sleeping, but I'm less familiar with other games.

Unity #gamedev s (and others!)

How do you handle pausing your game? I thought it would be easy to implement, but along the way I'm finding out lots of things about event systems and how they can potentially be resource intensive. I always took pausing for granted! What makes it tick?

The scheduling system can be used for a wide range of actions, from starting and stopping sounds to telling NPC's where to be at certain times.
For now I've simply used it to show and hide different time labels for the different segments in a day :)

Incredibly happy with today's progress! Added a worldtime tracking system which I used to create a basic day/night cycle, and an incredibly flexible event scheduling system.

Hey #gamedev s and other people with opinions, how long should an in-game day last in realtime for a farmingsim game according to you? I was thinking of around 30 minutes in a full day, with 23-ish minutes of daylight and 7-ish minutes of sunset and evening. (Let's say 06:00am till 02:00 max)

I'm glad that steam knows my preferences pretty well at this point that I don't have to see garbage like this. Honestly a waste of disk space. I think steam moderates their platform relatively well, but honestly with "games" like these I wouldn't mind them being a little more strict.

05.12.2024 11:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Honestly I like the idea of bundles games, it's definitely nostalgic, but with digital media I think it's easier to publish them on their own.

05.12.2024 11:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

If you bundle two "random" games together I'm afraid you'll miss the cohesion. Also, what I personally like about indie games is that they are relatively affordable. I can easily afford buying at least one indie game a month. Bundled games would probably be more expensive.

05.12.2024 11:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

In a way Ufo50 kinda did that! To bundle multiple games together that wouldn't be commercially viable on their own. For then it worked, but I think that's mainly because there was a great amount of cohesion between the games.

Honestly that's how you learn the most! Tutorials are incredible, but you really start to learn when you can apply things you've learned to other situations!

Following a tutorial from GameCodeLibrary on YouTube for the base setup of my own game. (placeholder art from the incredible @pixel-boy.bsky.social) I have a design document full of things to add and work on, and I couldn't be more hyped! #gamedev
