Current research, for a #magazine commission. Not from one of my pitches, but tangential to an earlier pitch I got work from. #freelance #journalism

A pre-Samhain gift to myself: the new edition of Marvel Comics' Tomb of Dracula omnibus, mostly written by Marv Wolfman and pencilled by Gene Colan. A classic run in the #horror #comics genre, with fascinating early #artwork amongst the extras. #Halloween #vampire #werewolf

Redford, Keaton and the Twilight of the Gods The recent deaths of the icons cast a mournful light on a fading generation of actors who once redefined what movie stars could be β€” complex, messy, and all too human.

To be frank, much of modern #cinema bores me rigid, with its shallow glibness and off-the-peg execution. #Hollywood www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...

Several years ago, Keith Miller published two volumes of reminiscences and material from his years running the Doctor Who Fan Club (of which I was also a member, joining during Jon Pertwee's tenure). It could arguably have been compressed into one, but such resources are highly valuable.

As someone active in UK Star Trek fandom in the 1970s, that statement is palpably untrue. Many of those running early Trek organisations were women, as were the authors of much of the fan-fiction.

Janet Quarton was an absolute powerhouse, and the Star Trek Action Group -- which I joined circa 1975/76 -- gave UK Trekkies a real focus for their enthusiasm. Gene Roddenberry himself praised her contribution, and reportedly named 'Q' in her honour.

Let's raise a glass to June Lockhart, who left us on Thursday, aged 100. From She-Wolf of London (1946) through Lost in Space (1965-68) and on to a final voice cameo in the 2021 Lost in Space remake, what a career she had.

I have not, but may well check it out. I see it has Columbo's 'guest killer of the week' format.

Out on Thursday: October's Yours Retro, including my feature on the final days of the Columbo movies, plus articles on Elvis Presley, Barbara Stanwyck, Anthony Newley, Irene Dunne and Cary Grant, Arlene Dahl, Conrad Veidt, the Bee Gees and Hollywood hauntings.

US60.00 plus credit card fee, so about $61. That's just over Β£45, which is a bit steep for a DVD, even a limited-edition pressing.

I keep hearing great things about Yippee Ki-Yay Mother Video's DVD of Albert Pyun's workprint for the Captain America #movie he directed in 1990. It's longer than the released version and is apparently much more coherent. US$33 plus international shipping is a bit of an obstacle, but time will tell.

Just learned Dark Horse published an updated edition of Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In yesterday. My old copy is in storage somewhere (I need more shelf space!), but it's a fun overview of the #horror and #exploitation #movie genre.

It really irritates me that the BBC grabs the majority of the licence fee (a little goes to C4 and S4C), whilst true heroes such as the folks behind @talkingpicturestv.bsky.social have to fight for every penny. (Disclosure: I do know Sarah, who runs this fantastic channel with her father & husband.)

Physical media, so it still counts. What I refuse to get involved with is paying for online libraries where films, tv shows or music you've paid for can be re-edited or even deleted without warning.

Seriously, #BlueSky, these images are "adult" and need hiding behind a warning? There's no nudity, unless a bare male chest counts.

As I might have mentioned, I never watch terrestrial television at home, mainly because the BBC demands I pay it Β£174.50pa* (even though I have no desire to partake of its product) or face prosecution, which I consider a protection racket. Anyway, here's some current viewing. Spot a trend?

I always loved Basil Gogos's cover paintings for Famous Monsters of Filmland, and here's his debut in 1960 (issue 9, Vincent Price), plus another from 1961 (issue 16, Lon Chaney). Trivia: the cover star for the first two issues was publisher James Warren, wearing #horror masks.
