INVESTIGATION: RCMP misled public about pepper spray incident at Fairy Creek The RCMP said they had to pepper spray a crowd to evacuate an injured officer. An exhaustive review of the available evidence shows that was not true.

I was reminded of this investigation I did with @ethancox.bsky.social and @brishti.bsky.social the other day, watching police indiscriminately attack protesters and then make up excuses after the fact. It happens here, too.

Some Canadians will get GST credit top up to tackle grocery costs: Carney - National | Globalnews.ca Carney announced the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, which he said, 'will deliver hundreds of dollars more into the bank accounts of more than 12 million Canadians.'

I don't want tax cuts that give me a new pittance every month, I want the government to tackle affordability at the top with a wealth tax and more corporate oversight.

Trigger Warning: Residential School denial, intergenerational trauma

Tomorrow, Thursday, January 22 at 10:30 a.m., individuals known for denying the history and harms of Indian Residential Schools are planning a protest at the Indigenous Residential School History and Dialogue Centre on the UBC Vancouver campus. (This is particularly cruel).

This is not academic disagreement. It is an act of denial that causes real harm to Survivors, their families, and communities.
Indian Residential Schools were real.
The violence was real.
Children died.
The trauma continues.

In response, community members are gathering not to debate, but to protect, bear witness, and care for our loved ones. A drum circle will be held as a peaceful, grounded presence. We are asking those who are able to:
β€’ Wear an orange shirt
β€’ Stand in solidarity
β€’ Join the circle as peacekeepers and speakers
β€’ Center Survivors and families in your presence
Your being there matters. Presence is a form of care. Taking a stand and speaking out is imperative in these times.
If you cannot attend, please share this message, hold Survivors in your thoughts, and speak truth where you are.

Illustrators who bravely explore the ongoing pandemic in their work break down stereotypes, contextualize differing experiences, build community, and raise awareness. These artists create spaces where audiences can reflect and engage with stories that can broaden our understanding of ourselves and the world. In this way, art is not only a community-building tool, but also functions as a β€œmirror”: for those who struggle to look directly at the elephant in the room, they can engage with its reflection. β€” Grae Salisbury
