I love my maps. This is the 1832 plan of Wigan Town centre drawn up by LT.Robert K Dawkins of the Royal Engineers.Transport of Coal/Cloth was first by the Douglas Navigation to the Ribble from 1740 and the canal had opened in 1820. Everything was about to change as the rail arrived 8 Sept 1832.

The surviving lower courses of a rectangular stone tower, set into wall foundations that curve away on either side. There is a complete, later wall behind it, of more regularly cur stone. Modern buildings are behind and above that. Part of a pub beer garden is visible on the right, beside the remains of the tower. The dominant colours in the stonework are shades of sandy brown.

The remains of the tower at the SE corner of the Roman legionary fort at #Chester / Deva, with a section of the mediaeval wall behind it. Built in the late first century, it originally had a ditch in front, filled in long ago. #RomanFortThursday #RomanBritain

A low barn like slated rural building heavily buttressed with a simple stubby bell tower. Bell was cast in Wigan circa 1740. Worship took place there from around 1245 to its demolition in 1878.

Interior of the chapel showing its wooden beam construction with individual box pews its speaking dias was removed and placed as pulpit in nearby Christchurch, Parbold when it took over as the parish in 1875. Local lore has it that the Parliamentarians (roundheads) stabled their horses here during the Siege of Lathom in 1644

A couple of pictures of Douglas Chapel, Parbold, Lancashire from William Prices 1895 notes on it.
