I will say, that I regret the times I felt resentful as a kid for the abuse I received for being perceived as gay despite actually being straight (mostly). I cringe, thinking about the times I only complained that "but I'm not gay!" and tried to disassociate myself.

It was especially hurtful back then as far too many family friends and important people in the theater community were dying of AIDS.

I was glad it became more socially unacceptable (sadly resurgent). Growing up in the theater in the 80s, I learned VERY early how awful it was. People I was close to were regularly targeted and it was hurled at me simply by association along with physical violence. Fuck anyone using that slur.
