Turning into the iceberg at full tilt and sinking the economy to the bottom of the Atlantic in the space of a few hours

Comparing your economy to the fate of a ship that sank because it was being reckless, ignored warnings of danger ahead, didn't provide the lookouts with the ability to see any oncoming danger soon enough, and didn't have enough life rafts to save everyone (particularly the poorer people aboard).

This studio awards-season email is really matching the current mood in a way I’m not sure they intended.

I can't imagine getting upset about someone being annoyed at my Britishness, like yeah the country does suck and has done some terrible shit. I fully agree with your grievances (but the tired memes about "British food" based on 1950s rations and struggle meals are so overplayed and stale)

Right? Getting hit by a wall of 1100Β°C, that's vaporising the vegetation around you, and deciding to explode just seems the polite thing to do

How is America a real place? At least our trees have the good grace to only explode when you hit them with a wall of fire (which frankly, understandable tbh)

You can't stop me from forcing you to experience something you don't want to experience, that's unamerican! Won't somebody think of my freedoms! Also, I'm going to run over all my beer with my truck because a trans person got given a can once, and that's violating my freedoms to enjoy non-woke beer!

Who the fuck is in their late 30s and even has the time and energy required for that level of petty bullshit? What sort of fucking bouji lifestyle must you be living that you can just burn that much of yourself every day on posting beef with a group where some of them are nearly half your age ffs

The US concept of freedom so often seemingly boils down to "freedom to exert my will unto others".

From Senator Chris McDaniel: β€œLately, some folks have taken to calling ICE β€œthe Gestapo.” It sounds fierce. It feels righteous. But it isn’t true, and it isn’t harmless.

The Gestapo was a secret police force. No warrants. No courts. No lawyers. And no appeals. People vanished in the night, not because they broke the law, but because the law no longer meant anything. The knock on the door was the sentence.

ICE isn’t that. Not even close.

ICE is a public agency enforcing laws passed by elected officials. Its agents file reports. They seek warrants. They lose cases. Judges stop them. Lawyers challenge them. Some detainees go home. That’s not tyranny. That’s bureaucracy, for better and worse.

You can hate immigration policy. You can argue enforcement is too harsh, too sloppy, or too broad. You can work to have the law changed if you wish. That’s a republic doing what it’s supposed to do.

But when you call ordinary law enforcement β€œthe Gestapo,” you cheapen real evil. You turn history into a slogan and suffering into a metaphor. And once every badge is tyranny, no tyranny is left to recognize.

In Mississippi, I was raised to believe words should earn their weight. This one hasn't yet. It throws around the language of dictatorship while living under a system where courts still rule, lawyers still argue, and the government still loses.

That difference matters.

Because the day enforcement becomes secret, unchecked, and answerable to no one, we won’t need to borrow names from history. We’ll know exactly what we’re dealing with.

And we’ll wish we’d kept our words honest.”

β€œICE isn’t the Gestapo. The Gestapo was…” (proceeds to describe qualities that apply to what ICE is currently doing)
