Seems like Representative Green’s message then is now as prescient as it ever was:

“Friends, listen up and pay attention. You need to know your rights.”

I was laughed out loud and was very happy to see him later elected to Congress. I don’t live in his district, but I’m proud that he serves and represents people like me, so it was not a surprise to see him speaking truth to power the other night.

He gave me deferred adjudication. I stayed out of trouble for 6 months and took an alcohol awareness class. My case was later dismissed several months after I was of legal drinking age.

He addressed everyone as “friends,” and he was fiercely committed that everyone in his courtroom have a clear picture of how the proceedings would go and what exactly our rights were.

Al Green was the Justice of the Peace who adjudicated my case. I will never forget the experience of being in his courtroom. He addressed everyone for an hour before the proceedings started. His message?

“Friends, you need to listen to this and know your rights.”

My roommate played in a Spanish language SKA band that toured Mexico that same summer. He came back with a nice haul of Mezcal and Tequila.

And then we ran into some trouble with an RA who reported us. I was arrested and charged for being a minor in possession.

Here’s why I will always love Congressman Al Green:
