If professional organisations had meaningful standards (along with some atual _cojones_) they would discipline him. As well as, in this case, possibly remove board certification.

But we are talking about the AMA here, and he is a sitting senator so all we get is a cup of nope.

An interesting thread was spawned by this post.

Yet _not one comment mentions the inferior license_. It may not be open source (as e.g. understood by the #Debian Free Software Guidelines) as it limits how you can deploy it. Tricky. So at U of Illinois we stick with RStudio Server for now. #rstats

It has been the honor of my life to serve as Commissioner of BLS alongside the many dedicated civil servants tasked with measuring a vast and dynamic economy. It is vital and important work and I thank them for their service to this nation.

You may have missed that I very much do _not_ intend to mute _all_ of Sharon's post, I merely aim to specifically skip these weekly summaries. Which requires an identifier. And that is all I suggested.

Could you possibly add a specific tag (say: #rstatstoots) to this series of recurrent posts to make it easier to mute them? Or post them from a dedicated account?

Small improvement to CRANberries: "Re-admitted" packages (that once existed but were later archived) are now grouped separately and will no longer be announced as 'new'. The post below is a first example: when there are more than one in a batch they will be grouped just like updates. #rstats

Battling Infectious Diseases in the 20th Century: The Impact of Vaccines The number of infected people, measured over 70-some years and across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, generally declined after vaccines were introduced.

I always find the before/after "panel" heatmaps of vaccination impacts compelling. Not sure what the canonical source is, the article below may be one.

There are always alternatives. On a yuge (48 cores, 0.5tb ram) server for students the root/sudo account uses bspm + r2u for common packages, reliably + fast + easily. Students use non-bspm installation below $HOME by default. Best of both worlds.

Also, should your team use Docker? #r2u #rstats

Last book I read was the eminently enjoyable "Three Shades of Blue" by James Kaplan. Been years since I read a Miles biography sonice to get back to all this--with superb related context about all this jazz.

And #chicago folks: This Friday Fitzgeralds in Forest Park has a 'Kind of Blue' tribute.

Absolutely. The RHEL/CentOS/Rocky setup is a sad one. Good maybe for sys admins as there is little in it, and it is old but terrible for users and devs. r2u cannot help here so manylinux is a good out. BTW Inaki has cran2copr for Fedora too.

Everything has upsides and downsides. Manylinux works more broadly but has the virtual env problem of littering your machine with library copies that go stale. When you can integrate with the system (as r2u does on Ubuntu) nothing beats that approach.

#r2u: Fast. Easy. Reliable. Pick all three.

Using gdb to debug R packages with native code This is "Using gdb to debug R packages with native code" by userprimary on Vimeo, the home for high quality videos and the people who love them.

The "interesting" bit is that "nothing ever changes" around R and its C interface (and that is a key _feature_) so the best introduction is possibly still an old (but "not aged") video tutorial by then R Core / BioC dev Seth Falcon. Should also work for lldb. #rstats #rcpp

Having tasted a few "Last Word" cocktails while traveling recently, I succumbed to the wonders of inter-state alcoholic beverage retailing and procured an (expensive) Green Chartreuse so that summer can commence with a "Last Word" in the garden. All of this is entirely the fault of @kjhealy.co.
