Germany’s China Shock For a long time, Germany’s political and business elites have chosen to ignore the economic threat emanating from Xi Jinping’s China. It’s now time to confront it.

As Merz travels to Beijing today, @tbenner.bsky.social, @jhensing.bsky.social & Florian Klumpp argue that Germany’s political and business elites need to finally confront the economic threat emanating from Xi Jinping’s China.

Germany's China shock.

How collective elite failure maneuvered Germany into position of weakness and vulnerability vis-à-vis Beijing’s authoritarian state capitalism & what needs to happen to change course.

Just in time for the Merz China trip.

New piece with @ipq.bsky.social.

OPINION: A credible EU growth strategy must start with an honest evaluation: Europe’s economic weakness doesn’t originate in Brussels.

It reflects a fundamental shift in the global economy.

Beyond the Big Powers Where is Germany really heading as it scrambles to diversify its foreign‑policy partnerships?

3️⃣ countries in 72 hours ✈️

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s fast-paced Gulf trip is part of an ambitious push to explore how Germany can diversify its international ties.

@jhensing.bsky.social went on air at @deutschewelle.dw.com's Berlin Briefing to discuss.

4/ Germany should act in concert with EU partners wherever possible. This will also entail resolving murky divisions of labor between EU and member states on economic security and better managing the uneven internal distributive consequences of deepening cooperation with countries beyond the EU.

06.02.2026 13:10 — 👍 3    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

3/ Better understanding of prospective partners’ varied priorities and of regional dynamics outside Europe (and the US) is urgently needed. The roster of policymakers and experts with deep knowledge and experience on the Gulf region, the Indo-Pacific, and elsewhere remains way too thin.

2/ Those halcyon days when global politics was supposedly entirely rules-based and when Germany always put values first never quite existed. Still, Berlin is coming to terms with operating under greater pressure and navigating more difficult compromises in many of these international encounters.

Some of the main points from my side:
1/ Global partnerships are key to addressing the existential challenges to its prosperity and security that Germany is facing – though much of the work also has to happen within Europe, notably on deepening and protecting the EU single market.
