No, I wasn't going to say that - that's a matter of register. It can make you feel terribly powerful to be a grammar pedant.

That's drawing a very long bow. We often say 'can I' to mean 'may I' these days. Language use changes over time, and it's rude to pretend you don't understand someone to make a pedantic, outdated grammar point. Which is the point of the meme.

Democracy the American way sounds a lot like apathy, misinformation & disproportionate representation.

Going on when you feel you have no strength left is the same as finding the strength to continue. Character, determination, endurance, doggedness - persisting when others might give up is I believe what's implied by the first & stated by the second. Nice symmetry, though.

You don't need to be particularly smart, just not exceedingly dumb.
