A thin strip of white across an otherwise blue sky. A contrail is a line-shaped cloud, also known as condensation trail, formed by the exhaust from aircraft engines at high altitude. It consists primarily of water in the form of ice crystals, which form when the hot, moist exhaust from the engine mixes with the extremely cold air of the upper atmosphere. The visibility and persistence of the contrail depends on the temperature and humidity of the surrounding air; in very dry air, it may quickly dissipate, while in humid conditions, it can spread and persist for hours, sometimes forming large, cirrus clouds.
