Every winter I end up having like 5-10 good conversations with new people.

A tea + coffee date with somebody new is like one of my favorite things to do in winter

Also from just a more liberatory perspective, that centralizes a lot of control over trending topics in a way that feels like a technocratic over-correction imo. What happens when we have the next national crises? How will those feeds respond & who decides?

Yes! I think those are great tools for more curatorial users who want to put alot of time + energy into curating their experience. Reminds me a bit of the Are.na app. Don’t think the casual user on a free app wants to do those things which creates a clear digital divide imo.

This app terribly needs simple features (finding mutuals, trending topics, news etc) to be a serious social networking space for casual users expdusing from the Other App™️. Otherwise it’ll stay as a great curatorial tool with a more niche user base.

Last thought (my b) but if our opposition is imperceptible to us, much will be co-opted/lost. I’d be interested in seeing how foreign policy, radical-progressive thoughts are discussed on this app. That will tell us a lot about its intentions.

What happens when we have the next crisis? Or moment where folks collectively need to connect & identify how to help. Some features on this app could help with that but I don’t think community is ease. It often necessitates disagreement.

I think that’s actually my concern. Maybe this is just my pov as a community organizer, but If we make our online spaces inflexible and too apetizing, we forfeit alot of opportunities for real education/action. It’s anti-social in the sense that it runs the risk of conflict aversion

I think folks are noticing that this app is incredibly anti-social but can’t yet articulate it. Opposite extreme of an app like X that keeps folks using it via constant agitation. Ppl want a safe, more interconnected experience but this app isn’t in position to provide that.

Could absolutely see how neoliberal politics & technocrats could hide from the public on this app. X is centered around agitation to keep you logged in whereas this app has no agitation at all. Means this is neither an effective educational nor organizing tool. It’s just a shiny new thing.

Like, ppl have to brand + market themselves to have any value/dignity in the workforce and we never reeled it in. This app strikes me like a sobering progression of that reality whereas X is now anti-information & nihilistic. They’re both two very different reactionary extremes in my opinion.

I didn’t leave & doubt this app is a real alternative. Bluesky strikes me as a space for journalists & “specialists” (domain feature, neoliberal politics, custom
feed feature) —not just everyday social networking. Think it speaks to the *professionalization of just existing under capitalism 🧵
