'Train Dreams' Is a Tribute to the Men Who Built America Anchored by a career-high performance from Joel Edgerton, this tale of a railroad laborer who experiences love and tragedy is a modest masterpiece.

One of my favorite movies of the year-slash-decade is now in theaters β€” and this really is a see-it-in-theater-if-you-can experience. You'll be blown away by Joel Edgerton and emotionally bowled over no matter what, though. (Hits Netflix 11/21)

Glen Powell’s Big New Action Blockbuster Is an Angrier, Brainier Take on a 1980s Schlock Classic The new Running Man is an angrier, brainier take for our β€œEat the Rich” era.

I wrote about The Running Man, which is smarter and funnier than the original butβ€”and I think this might be the first time I’ve ever said thisβ€”doesn’t hate its audience enough.

Two Oscar Hopefuls Show the Supposed Stories Behind Artistic Masterpieces. Only One Is Persuasive. How does creativity work? New movies about Springsteen and Shakespeare come up with very different answers.

I wrote about Springsteen, Shakespeare, and the right (and wrong) way to illustrate the mystery of creation.

The Astonishing Versatility of Diane Keaton Keaton, who died at 79, is often remembered for her comedic performance in Annie Hall, but she did so much more throughout her career.

One of the signature actresses of her or any era, and a woman who paved a path most Hollywood actresses -haven't- followed: dressing to express joy and a sense of self. On Diane Keaton: time.com/7325208/dian...

It’s Going to Be Nominated for All the Oscars. I Hated It. Emma Stone is phenomenal in the new movie from the auteur behind Poor Things. Too bad about that ending.

The headline slightly overstates the case--I neither know whether Bugonia will get Oscar noms, nor did I *totally* hate it--but yeah, Yorgos Lanthimos' claustrophobic black comedy about a low-wage worker who kidnaps & tortures his Big Pharma boss was definitely not my bag.

'Bugonia' Asks: Are Aliens Among Us? And Do They Look Like Emma Stone? Yorgos Lanthimos' latest movie deals in conspiracies, corporate doublespeak, and celebrity weirdness being a plus. In other words: our current reality.

David Lynch Was the Great, Golly-Gee Chronicler of American Darkness Lynch, who died today at 78, combined Eisenhower-era innocence and experimental cinema to forge a disturbing, darkly hilarious look at American life.

I wish I never had to write this piece. On the late great David Lynch, a filmmaker who taught me how to look directly into the darkness.
