Second Glance: The Scorsese-esque Melancholy of ‘Cop Land’ Welcome to “Second Glance,” a bi-weekly column that spotlights an older film of note (thanks to an anniversary, a connection to a new release, or new disc or streaming availability) that was not as…

COP LAND - still Mangold's best in a walk - was released on this day in 1997. I wrote a little love letter to it on the old site:

As end-of-empire scenarios go it is so much more dignified to get your capital city sacked by the Visigoths than to have a bunch of illiterate rich people in their 70s doing it through a series of incomprehensible tantrums because their brains were defeated by their phones.

If I have to explain to you why it's a bad idea to use a machine that makes shit up 15-80% of the time AND destroys the environment AND contributes to rising fascism and genocide AND puts brilliant skillful creatives out of work by stealing their work, then we're already speaking different languages

One of Most Disturbing NYC Thrillers of the 1980s Has Been AWOL -- Until Now Impossible to see for nearly 40 years, Night of the Juggler returns to screen as a time capsule with a vengeance.

I first saw NIGHT OF THE JUGGLER on cable when I was a kid. If you like late Horror City sleaze-pulp filled with '70s character actor and featuring James Brolin at peak Brawny-mascot hotness, you owe it to yourself to see this restoration on a big screen.

Zero Tolerance Five years after the George Floyd protests, many liberals blame “wokeness” for stifling open debate. So why can’t they handle being disagreed with?

I bet that reading Andrea Long Chu on Thomas Chatteron Williams will brighten up my day. www.vulture.com/article/post...

Cory Booker is so void of any real principles or substance or policies, he is pure political theater and represents everything people hate about the typical American politician—of course he has nothing to say about someone who is so fundamentally the opposite of him

I think Mamet wrote some good plays (not Oleanna) some good screenplays, and I will always defend Spartan (with Kilmer’s best performance). But he’s yet another casualty of Boomer Psychosis and his tough guy act today where the nicest and gentlest interviewer made him go ballistic was embarrassing

Flavorwire Interview: Billy Bob Thornton on Returning to Directing in ‘Jayne Mansfield’s Car’ It has been 12 years since Miramax Films unceremoniously dumped Daddy and Them, the third film written and directed by Billy Bob Thornton, into a straight-to-cable release and, it seemed, put an end…

Happy 70th birthday to Billy Bob Thornton, born on this day in 1955. I interviewed him for the old site:

How ‘sex, lies, and videotape’ Changed Indie Filmmaking Forever It began with three brief items in his notebooks. “A film about deception and lost earrings,” went one. “Everybody has a past,” went another. And finally, “Friend on the couch. Affair with the wife.”…

'sex, lies, and videotape' was released on this day in 1989. A deep dive on why it was such a groundbreaker:
