3) Or just fill in the blank with a suggestion of your own? I am open to all ideas, within reason. Right now the magazine is in a break-even stage, even after the loss of the Amazon subscriptions, but clearly we need to move forward . . .

1) a $250 target to hire a co-editor. To be honest I do my best with someone else, as I cherish my previous relationships, with Jack Fisher, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and Clara Madrigano. Iโm well aware of my inadequacies, so . . .

A question: I may wait until the school year begins with this, but I was thinking a subscription campaign for The Dark, but for what exactly? Here are the options:
30.07.2025 20:38 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0
Or, at a glance, it just doesnโt fit what I need for the magazine, for whatever reason. Itโs better to dust yourself off and take that story and resubmit to another market as soon as possible, to maximize your time and energy. Please do not respond to rejections, at all.
30.07.2025 19:19 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0
As a reminder: rejections can come as fast as a few seconds after a submissionโs receipt. Sometimes this is because the inbox is empty, and I just happened to get to it when the notification pops up. Or itโs an instant rejection because, well, it violated a guideline, somehow.

A good question: no, it won't be an issue.

I have need for two reprints, preferably published within the last two years, only in print (not online), either in a magazine or an anthology or a ss coll, under 6,000 words, sent to submissions@thedarkmagazine.com. TIA!

The Dark inbox is once again empty: your best bet, at the moment, would be something on the smaller size, 2k to 4k, rather than something longer. As always, quick responses are the usual norm at this magazine, so you really canโt go wrong in trying us out!
03.12.2023 17:53 โ ๐ 8 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0
I will ask and get back to you as soon as possible. It's not a bad idea, at all!

4) (Our direct subscribe page is here: thedarkmagazine.com/subscribe/) And, again, thank you for whatever you have done or what you can do, going forward. You are appreciated.

3) Whether thatโs between patreon or weightless, it doesnโt really matter. but that is where we currently are. So, if you haven't supported your favorite magazine yet, whether itโs us or someone else, please consider doing so.
09.11.2023 16:54 โ ๐ 22 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
2) It is almost for certain that weโll have to make further changes just to survive, perhaps even a lower pay rate, as a temporary solution. Now, if I want to keep the five cents a word now in place, I would just need about eighty new subscribers.
09.11.2023 16:54 โ ๐ 26 ๐ 4 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 3
1) As initially feared, some straight talk when it comes to The Dark Magazine basically boils down to this: the early reports from Amazon for the KU subscription model are not looking good at all. I canโt go into details, not yet, but this is pretty cataclysmic.
09.11.2023 16:53 โ ๐ 57 ๐ 47 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 13
4) So, if you want to support one of the few semi-pro dark fantasy/ horror markets that is open year round to authors, and provides, every month, great fiction to its readers, consider subscribing or tossing us a few dollars every month . . .
02.10.2023 20:58 โ ๐ 31 ๐ 6 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 1
3) . . . numbers that havenโt reflected in the increases seen at patreon/weightless. Mind you, even if a fraction of that moved over, right now, it would be life-saving, but here we are . . . and if nothing changes, then I can see making more changes, but the magazine is pretty lean as it is . . .
02.10.2023 20:57 โ ๐ 25 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
2) . . . to really make much of a difference. In fact, I imagine with every succeeding year the payments will increasingly crater, which amounts to a slow death by a thousand cuts. (Or sudden, who knows?) And I know for a fact that there was about six hundred subscribers left, near the end . . .
02.10.2023 20:57 โ ๐ 27 ๐ 4 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
1) Iโm going to make this public: for The Dark the loss of Amazon Newsstand effectively resulted in ten thousand dollars of revenue going poof, for the entire year. (Yes, that much!) Iโve made some cost-saving changes, but I donโt hold much hope for the monies from Kindle Unlimited . . .

31.08.2023 14:51 โ ๐ 25 ๐ 9 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0
8) In the meantime, letโs all celebrate together our special anniversary a decade in the making, with many sincere hopes that with every month to come, another issue of _The Dark_ will soon find its way to you, with stories both unsettling _and_ unique . . .
31.08.2023 14:48 โ ๐ 12 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
7) After all, we really canโt pull this off without you, and it has always been with your support that we have done so much, and Iโd love to see that continue.
31.08.2023 14:48 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
6) So, in that light, I encourage everyone to find a way to subscribe to the magazine, whether itโs through our Patreon page or through Weightless Books. (www.thedarkmagazine.com/amazon-subsc...)
31.08.2023 14:48 โ ๐ 12 ๐ 13 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 1
5) It will take time and energy, either way, and I definitely want _The Dark_ to be still here, with another one hundred issues, over another ten more years.
31.08.2023 14:47 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
4) As you may have heard, especially if you are an Amazon subscriber, the Kindle Newsstand is now effectively gone, which is a massive blow to our business model and not easily replaced, at least not quickly or even easily.
