Their argument is that net zero costs too much and what West Northants contributes to climate change is negligible compared to the rest of the world. So by that argument, I wonโ€™t pay them my Council Tax because my contribution is negligible compared with the total budget.

West Northamptonshire Council also voted to scrap net zero targets hours later.

Iโ€™m no fan of the Cybertruck but this looks like a truck bed fire, not a battery pack fire. If the battery was the cause, there would be damage all along the bottom of the vehicle between the wheels, not just at the rear; and thereโ€™s no way it would have been โ€˜quickly extinguishedโ€™.

Itโ€™s the battery that is the most expensive part (>50%), but they are getting cheaper. There are currently 79 EVs on Autotrader with over 100000 miles. Try Googling โ€˜100 year old EVโ€™. There are several, all still running on their original motor and I think some may have the original battery.

We bought a used 2021 EV and the battery still has 100% capacity after 20000miles.

The battery lasts much longer than 8y. Thatโ€™s just the warranty. You donโ€™t throw it away because the warranty expires. The Zoe thing was to address exactly the concern some people had that the battery wouldnโ€™t last and would need replacing after 5 years. In practice, it hasnโ€™t been an issue.

Totally agree. When I first visited Austria in the 90s they used to reuse PET drinks bottles in the same way as glass. Supermarkets had bins to collect them. The reused ones often had scuffs which I suppose didnโ€™t look as nice and they just put them in the โ€˜recyclingโ€™ now.

Three donโ€™t even support Visual Voicemail yet. Theyโ€™re the only major UK network that doesnโ€™t.

Renault used to do exactly that. Earlier ZOEs have a monthly battery subscription which you still have to pay when buying 2nd hand. Theyโ€™re now not much cheaper to buy than the later ones with โ€˜batteries includedโ€™.
Can you link to evidence of your depreciation figures? They donโ€™t seem right.

True, but you need hills! Wouldnโ€™t work in, say Netherlands. It means a reorganisation of the grid to use more, smaller generators rather than a few huge ones, but thatโ€™s already happening. Plus youโ€™re reusing old batteries so theyโ€™re relatively cheap.

There is also scope to use them in grid storage for wind/solar. The fact is that the vast majority of EV batteries are still in use in their EV.
When they do eventually wear out they can be recycled into their constituent materials

Thatโ€™s the crux of the problem. They werenโ€™t making a profit on the old tech which is why most started with premium luxury models to bump up the price. Newer tech is cheaper and allows for cheaper models which are now starting to appear.
Old EV batteries are being reused as home storage.

Last UK government removed many incentives for EV adoption. Norway had lots of incentives and had huge uptake.
We need more charging infrastructure for those without a drive/garage. Cheap home charging is key, along with cheaper EV models (theyโ€™re coming soon).

8 years is the warranty not the lifespan. No mfr is going to give a warranty if they expect it to be heavily used. Most early EVs still have the original battery. They CAN be recycled but theyโ€™re not because most are still working. I completely agree with you on PHEV/hybrids, though.

28.11.2024 12:35 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Batteries are improving and getting cheaper. The latest Vauxhall/Opel Mokka is the same price for EV/ICE versions. Batteries donโ€™t burn out after 5 years: every mfr has min 8 year battery warranty. Latest Chinese ones have million km warranty and are leading the way, not Tesla.
