And that’s a wrapβ€”our audit matches perfectly!

Today we confirmed once again that the results we reported are accurate. RLAs are a rigorous, transparent, and efficient way to verify election outcomes, and we’re proud to complete another successful audit.πŸ‘

If what we see on the paper ballots perfectly matches the system’s record, we’re done! πŸ™Œ

Then we wait for the other Colorado counties to finishβ€”all of us must pass the audit together for the election results to be confirmed.

Our bipartisan audit boards are now reviewing the selected ballots. They read the voter’s choices directly from the paper and enter them into the audit software to compare the paper record with how that ballot was originally counted.

Because we had more ballots returned than any other county, we have more ballots to look through to find our list, but it doesn’t necessarily mean we need to audit more ballots. The number of ballots we audit is based on how close the race was we’re auditing. Today we’re auditing 381 ballots.

Our first job is to track down each ballot randomly selected for today’s audit. Every ballot gets a unique number when it’s scanned, so we can find that exact paper ballot again quickly and accurately.

It’s Risk-Limiting Audit day! πŸŽ‰

Today, w/ leaders from both major political parties, we’re doing a quality check to ensure the results we reported truly reflect the votes you cast. RLAs are one of CO’s strongest security tools. Here’s a quick explainer on them:

β€˜It smells like democracy’: Jeffco’s β€˜I Voted’ stickers get a nostalgic twist Voters in Jefferson County will be able to smell democracy and maybe even a bit of nostalgia this Election Day.

Are you ready for our new I Voted stickers?! 🀩

They're the 1st of their kind, anywhere, ever, as far as we can tell, and we've got calls coming in from around the US asking for them. Jeffco voters, you can get one right here in your local vote centers, which open Monday!

Giant spiders aren’t real (we don’t think), but they’re definitely not allowed to vote. If you can't find your ballot because the spiders hid it, visit any vote center to get a new one. And don’t worry, we’ll void your original one.

If your ballot is sitting there, not filled out because you’re not sure what your vote will mean, here’s a quick reminder:

βœ… YES means you want a change
❌ NO means you want things to stay the same

Use your Blue Book and Notice of Election Booklet to learn about the issues! Happy voting!

Next up: adjudication, where we determine voter intent.

A bipartisan team reviews any ballot the scanner flags for unclear marksβ€”smudges, checkmarks, double marks, or scribblesβ€”to confirm how to count each vote.

Accessibility matters. We’re testing our ADA-accessible ballot-marking devices, too.

These allow voters with disabilities to vote privately and independently, producing the same paper ballot that gets scanned and counted like all others.

Close-up of a ballot where one race has no votes and one race has two candidates marked

Close-up of a ballot where one race has no votes and one race has two candidates marked

Let’s talk overvotes and undervotes:
βœ… Overvote = picking too many candidates in one race (those votes don’t count).
βœ… Undervote = leaving a race blank or voting for fewer than allowed.
Our LAT makes sure the system flags both correctly.

A tabulation scanning machine sits on a standing desk with a monitor showing the station number and date. Next to the machine is a stack of test ballots.

Here’s how we prove the system works ⬇️
1️⃣ Bipartisan teams mark & count test ballots by hand
2️⃣ Tabulator equipment counts them + a full deck of other test ballots
3️⃣ Results are compared and they must match exactly
It’s called the Logic & Accuracy Test, and it’s democracy’s quality check.
