Yet there's an intuitive & almost inevitable way to arrive at this expression.

Using theory-driven modeling โ there is a reason for that interaction that was *hopefully* preregistered. Because the orthogonalized interaction doesnโt impact the direct effects, you can show your interaction hypothesis test but still connect with the literature by interpreting direct effects.
