16.10.2025 07:18 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Ran an awesome session of @hellomcdm.bsky.social's #drawsteel today, got to try some of the new terrain I made but unfortunately @trashmobminis.bsky.social had 5 ferocity to spend on Wrecking Ball so one piece didn't last very long...

@mattcolville.bsky.social has talked about the importance of 1-page primers for running games. Here's one I made for an adventure I'll be running in @hellomcdm.bsky.social's #DrawSteel starting this week

I have a few friends who are casual TTRPG players, but apprehensive about a more complex game like Draw Steel.
However, my explanation of the Negotiation system has them intrigued. It really impressed me with how quickly it can turn a random NPC into a complex person in the minds of the players.
After every session of the 2-year #dnd campaign I finished in 2024, I was completely drained and exhausted.
The sample size is smaller, but every session of @hellomcdm.bsky.social's Draw Steel that I've run has left me feeling energized!
Not sure what causes that, but it feels damn good
Two primed miniatures of heavily armored figures bearing large shields. One is primed white with a pointed helm, an open book in one hand, and candles on their pauldrons. The other is primed black with a more dynamic pose, holding the shield out with their other hand in a fist. Both miniatures were digitally kitbashed together from files purchased from Lord of the Print on myminifactory.
I'm making a homebrew Rook class for @hellomcdm.bsky.social's Draw Steel, a tanky psionicist.
Kitbashed together these minis for the Martyr and Juggernaut subclasses from some excellent models by Lord of the Print and thought:
"Hey, primed black and white they kind of look like chess pieces!"π
Just finished a Draw Steel one-shot, we had a great time.
It's refreshing to play in a system where the mechanics are exciting in themselves, not just a means to an end.
I find myself writing adventures in such a way as to feature more of the rules, rather than avoiding them
I say this partly in jest, but when I still played D&D I could almost pick a part of the game at random and find some way to improve it. Draw Steel is much more cohesive, with very few such holes.
I also frequently realize that my cool idea for an ability is already in the game, a good problem.
I'm planning to use an upcoming lvl 1 Draw Steel playtest to explore the origins of the second-nastiest boss from my last campaign.
Better read your abilities! You'll need those against the giant vampire dragon. Don't worry she's technically younger this time.
It's my #1 "game my players don't know they love yet" game, waiting for the version with pretty art and layout so I can show it to them without their eyes glazing over.

02.01.2025 18:43 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I really enjoy Draw Steel's ping-pong initiative, roll to see which side goes first and then that side chooses a character (or sometimes a small group of monsters) to act and then the other side does the same.
Great for promoting teamwork and tactics, and bosses don't get overwhelmed
Seconded. TTRPGs are collaborative storytelling, but the table isn't the only place you can collaborate! I've had a lot of success having individual meetings with my players to discuss their characters.
The players are your co-writers, not just your audience.
I definitely found this to be true in my last campaign. Giving players a few clear opportunities to be silly each session (funny NPCs, low stakes situations like fishing, a joke item, etc.) makes it SO much easier to get everyone focused and invested when things get serious.
02.01.2025 18:28 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0For ADHD reasons, one thing I find really helps me read and learn a TTRPG is writing a bit of new material for it.
For @hellomcdm.bsky.social's Draw Steel, I've been writing the Rook class as I go, a psionic tank with an emphasis on forced movement. It started as a test but it's looking promising!
Making 3rd-party content for @hellomcdm.bsky.social's Draw Steel is turning out to be pretty hard because the base game is already good
