School librarians are freaking out. The site is used a lot, esp for middle school. And nonfiction that isn't narrative or bio - such as country fact books - has been decimated in kidlit to the point where it doesn't really exist anymore outside little kid books, so no replacement for the site.

Have literally not laid eyes on a book other than my library book from home since I arrived at Disneyland.

One of their most famous princesses is a total bookworm and yet. Not even a Belle-themed bookstore in Fantasyland that is actually just a front for selling pins, ears, and backpacks. Smh

Maybe books are just too practical? Too heavy? Too prone to getting wet on Tiana's Bayou Adventure? Everyone is too exhausted from walking to read books?

Disney has its own publishing company and doesn't even bother selling them in a place where everyone is primed to buy everything they lay eyes on.

There is no bookstore in Downtown Disney 🧐

The publishers said it was because ebooks don't get the wear and tear of physical books, which, yes, libraries do have to buy replacement copies of. But give me a bone folder and a roll of book tape and I can make the average book last a lot longer than 2 years.

When I was a librarian, you could buy an ebook for 2 years or 24 check outs before it disappeared from your catalog and you had to repurchase. And the popular titles were more than $60. They were basically dynamic pricing the books based on popularity!

AND did you know that for that $60, the library can either offer the book for a certain amount of time or a certain number of checkouts before they have to pay for the book all over again?!

While independent bookstores are giving out free whistles, hosting protest sign making events, and donating proceeds to mutual aid, Amazon is *checks notes* providing technology that assists ICE in their terrorizing of communities.

Independent bookstores deserve your support. Amazon does not.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

Public school districts need to do everything in their power to bring back highly trained school media specialist or school librarian positions they've cut over the past decade plus. Media literacy is not a luxury. It needs to be in all levels of our schools.

Dems should introduce legislation now defunding ICE and CBP operations in Minnesota, so they have to leave the state. One sentence bill. Demand an immediate vote. Maybe refuse to vote for cloture on any funding bills (or other bills) until a vote. Make the GOP Congress break w/ Trump or own it all.

I keep thinking “my god the people they’ve killed seem like exceptionally good folks” and I think the lesson there is that they’re not exceptional, but that wonderful people abound and that a baseline distrust in humanity is a shitty conservative trope that privileges power over collective strength

Also, may I say that I don’t agree with people saying ICE and CBP need “more training.” They’re doing exactly what this administration has trained them to—impose a reign of fear in blue cities. They don’t need more training. They need to be ripped up root and branch.
