We talk about this a lot on DP and in our book but β€œwaste fraud and abuse” as a rhetorical formulation really has done untold damage both in politics at large and to people’s actual lives/material conditions. The only way forward is to excise this thinking from our politics

Japanese American Incarceration Survivors Remember What the US Forgot During WWII, President Roosevelt invoked the Alien Enemies Act and incarcerated 125,000 Japanese Americans. Eighty years later, some of the camps’ last survivors reflect on lives scarred by injustice.

The Trump administration has tried to erase this chapter of American history, but @longlead.com preserved these survivors' testimonies to ensure the world never forgets the injustice they endured.

The left tried for decades to pass green energy subsidies, passed them, the subsidies worked, and now literally the entire planet's electricity grid is going to convert to solar+battery. It just doesn't feel like "tech" because it mostly produces kinda boring blue collar jobs instead of billionaires

Honestly, journalism funders should have just handed them 10x this amount, but maybe it’s better to come from the community.

One of my favourite memories living in NYC was seeing Frederick Wiseman's "In Jackson Heights" at the Film Forum. It taught me so much about the city I was living in, and that little intermission!

Might have to watch Ex Libris tonight in remembrance.

In the end, Hannibal walked out of his city saying the Romans wanted only him. Why should his soldiers make love to their swords? He walked out alone, a small figure in the great field, his elephants dead at the bottom of the Alps’ crevasses. So might we go to our Roman death in triumph. Our love is of marble and large tawny roses, in the endless harvests of our defeat. We have slept with death all our lives. It will grind out its graceless victory, but we can limp in triumph over the cold intervening sand.

Hannibal's elephants were in the NYT today, as good an occasion as any to reread this favorite Jack Gilbert poem. This one is always close at hand.

this is comically evil. brazenly anti-social. just absolute black-pilled nihilism. we will not have a republic, we will not be free, until we regulate these companies to the point where β€” at a bare minimum β€” they're too afraid to put stuff like this down on paper.

With Ring, American Consumers Built a Surveillance Dragnet Ring's 'Search Party' is dystopian surveillance accelerationism.

Ring is a wildly dangerous company. Always has been. But it has sort of flown under the radar the last couple years as it tried to soften its image. Make no mistake that this is an extremely dangerous surveillance dragnet:
