It's very cool to do cool stuff and then not talk about it!

You know who wants you to share everything you do on social media?
1) cops
2) social media ceos
3) judgey people who think if they don't hear about your activism it doesn't count
4) cops again but this time it's feds

The way this works is that you either defend Khalil's First Amendment rights, no matter what you think about his specific views, or else you acquiesce to a totalitarian dystopia where the government can disappear people for expressing opinions opposed by the regime. There's really no middle ground.

Yes shop small if you can! Also if anyone buys fabric as stores close PLEASE wash it. Fabric, especially cheaper ones, can be treated with things to make them sit nicely on the bolt but irritate skin very badly with repeat or prolonged contact. (From a former big box chain fabric store workerโ€ฆ)

Ooooh such a good reminder. This is also making me very appreciative of the people whose whole job is UX writing and writing for accessibility on a whole other level.

I say as Iโ€™m about to schedule a meeting about labeling a button better (I promise it matters!)

I am struggling to convey โ€œidk - heโ€™s just a lil guyโ€ vibes as alt text. So far the solutions Iโ€™ve found on the internet does not seem to understand this problem. Unless โ€œidk - heโ€™s just a lil guyโ€ is valid alt text???

Daily drawings illustrated with watercolors in a small weekly planner. Monday - small circle with arms and big eyes carrying an umbrella in the rain. Tuesday - tiny moon with a house on it in space. Wednesday - trees at night. Thursday - stretched out simplified face, text reads โ€œso tiredโ€ Friday - a black blob guy waving. Shaped kind of like a bean. Probably friendly. Friday - text reads โ€œcocktail partyโ€ one hand holds a rocks glass with cherries on a skewer and brown liquid. Another hand holds a glass of yellow liquid thatโ€™s supposed to be a French 75. Sunday - circular blob character with big eyes and an anxious face has a scribbly thought bubble over its head.

Still more January daily doodles in my #travelersnotebook. This also makes me realize how hard good alt text is. Iโ€™m pretty sure โ€œlil blob guyโ€ is not helpful. Anyone have tips for describing kind of derpy things?

My current favorite book around this is The Mushroom at the End of the World: on the Possibility of Life in Capitalist Ruins by Anna Tsing. It has mushroom biology! Global forestry history! Lessons for collaborative survival from fungal ecology!

I think it genuinely shifted something in my brain.

Article title: Agenda Seeding: How 1960s Black Protests Moved Elites, Public Opinion and Voting

Article Abstract

How do stigmatized minorities advance agendas when confronted with hostile majorities? Elite theories of influence posit marginal groups exert little power. I propose the concept of agenda seeding to describe how activists use methods like disruption to capture the attention of media and overcome political asymmetries. Further, I hypothesize protest tactics influence how news organizations frame demands. Evaluating black-led protests between 1960 and 1972, I find nonviolent activism, particularly when met with state or vigilante repression, drove media coverage, framing, congressional speech, and public opinion on civil rights. Counties proximate to nonviolent protests saw presidential Democratic vote share increase 1.6โ€“2.5%. Protester-initiated violence, by contrast, helped move news agendas, frames, elite discourse, and public concern toward โ€œsocial control.โ€ In 1968, using rainfall as an instrument, I find violent protests likely caused a 1.5โ€“7.9% shift among whites toward Republicans and tipped the election. Elites may dominate political communication but hold no monopoly.

Iโ€™ve been studying civil rights protests for 20 years. With new mobilization against Trumpโ€™s agenda, Iโ€™m sharing a thread summarizing my research on how nonviolent & violent actions by 1960s activists and police influenced media, elites, public opinion & voters. 1/ www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Google ending AI arms ban incredibly concerning, campaigners say - BBC News The tech giant previously ruled out applications that were "likely to cause harm".

So weaponizing AI even further is REAL bad - especially as AI is REALLY GOOD at internalizing racism, sexism, and pretty much every other -ism that involves targeting marginalized people.

But anything to keep the earnings numbers up - right?

If a book has preprinted dates, my brain gets mad if I donโ€™t keep up. Last year was a daily journal in a #hobonichi which Iโ€™m still doing. Harnessing this quirk in 2025 to do a little doodle a day in a passport sized #travelersnotebook.
