Travellers Against Racism

When people see us in shops & follow us around, or see us in theme parks & throw dirty looks, theyre creating memories of how we're treated. They're sowing a seed of distrust and rejection. They're teaching us that we're seen as different & unwanted. Why would we try to fit in with people like that?

I woke up this morning with a heavy feeling. I lay in bed and started to think about my childhood. My main memories of that time are being with my family, playing on camps and sites. But always being moved on. Being called names by random people. Having our trailers broken and attacked. Always hate.

There is a homeless person I have been helping, & he is struggling in this cold. I have paid for a room and some food for him for the night, but he is in desperate need of a new tent and some clothes. If I set up a Gofundme, would anyone be willing to donate and help clothe him?

My 3 year old daughter asked me "what is a Traveller?"

Before I could answer, my 5 year old son told her "its what we are. It's people who do good things and share their toys and talk like we do but sometimes people don't like us".

Yet people who see families in carparks and roadside assume that they are always there by choice.

The media reports don't help either. They portray us as invaders of their land.

You're a Traveller with a young family. Sites are full. Stopping places have been closed off. You're not welcome on caravan parks. You can't stay on the roadside. You can't keep driving forever. Your family needs rest. You see an empty carpark. You are exhausted. What would you do?

Did you know that the bricks, mounds, barriers, and boulders you see around fields have been put there by the local authorities to stop Traveller people and young families from having a place to rest?

These places are often ancient stopping places for Traveller and Romany people.

Did you know that there are many Traveller and Romani people who work across the UK in paid roles, including doctors, nurses, as firemen and the police, but are forced to hide their ethnicity due to racism and prejudice in the workplace?

I've only been here a few weeks, but still, it's a LOT more relaxed than that other dark place 😌

There have been instances of people who are openly racist on here too, but hopefully, the majority stay away and stick to Twitter/X.

I speak for me, and those I know don't like the word. Your 2 friends don't make up the entire population of Travellers ffs.
